Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ja. I'm not concerned with fighting the Trumplings. I haven't written them off so much as I just don't think I'd wanna waste my time and patience on people with set opinions like that. I'm much happier just spreading the word to those who are merely uninformed in the first place. If I ever talk to someone who makes obvious racist, sexist, "not gonna happen in a million years, buddy" comments, I'm just gonna end the conversation.
I probably should not have engaged a veteran friend of mine in this, who I know is an inveterate, obstinate smartass who says contrary things just to annoy. I didn't lose my cool with him, but I did lose my train of thought and go onto tangents a couple times. Which kind of diluted and shot down my point.

Especially if, again, said protestors are white. They don't have much problem with lobbing concussion grenades at Indigenous women at Standing Rock.

Same here. My interest in engaging with Trumplings is nearly zero at this point, because there's frankly no way I wouldn't end up losing my temper when confronted with someone who can unironically support that man.
You don't necessarily need to. Not everyone has to be on the front lines of the idea war. There are any number of roles to be filled in this battle.

Then get informed. Figure out a topic that works for you. That interests you. Something you know is threatened that is dear to you. Then learn about it and memorize the important facts without rehearsing them over and over, if you can. After that it's just a matter of knowing your audience. And understanding that you're surrounded by people, and even if you fail, you can learn from it and do better next time.
Trust me, I haven't gotten the point successfully through every time. Hell, on another site I did a thread about this, there's only been a few replies from some Germans, and according to them, at least, Obama let the whole Net Neutrality thing lapse, fall into the hands of the UN, and become a country by country issue. Which is how Trump can threaten it at all. Apparently Germany doesn't even have NN anymore?

At least my pet issue has a Relevant XKCD that I can link people to.
Seriously, why can't people get that climate change is something that's happening NOW and will fuck things up if it continues? I understand the economic angle, but it will most likely be more worth it in the long term if action is taken.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonHonestly, I doubt we'd need the draft. If they do things in the correct order, they can get enough people to fill the warm bodies they need anyway. Automate everything so the jobs are scarce. More people need to eat. Up the ante on drones, vehicles, and anti-riot weaponry and you won't need as many bodies to do the job, just enough to sweep through the debris after you're done bombing everything. Metal Storm for crowd control (mass batteries of gun barrels filled from breech to muzzle with electronically fired bullets that all go off in one long string together. Nothing says crowd control like firing ALL your bullets at once.) and you pretty much just need to sift through the bodies for whoever's still breathing. There won't be many left to fire a gun, and all of these things can be mounted on robotic vehicles and tanks.
Wow.

x4 Same here. Sort of. I don't have diabetes, but I do have autism, which should prevent me from getting drafted by default. Same goes with my younger brother. The only one I'm kind of worried about is my older brother, but he still needs to take pills for his depression and anxiety issues, and he doesn't really get anger management, so he might still count.

Word of advice to all my prospective fellow draft dodgers: if LGBT rights keep getting hammered then, oddly enough, that might be our ticket out. They bring back Don't Ask, Don't Tell? Sorry, can't serve, I am suddenly gay.
And if you already are, then hey, even better. It's all above-board.

As I said before on the last page, he'll need Congress to give him the funds for a Wall, and I don't think he can get 50 Senators to do it. He can finish the Double Fence that is in need to be finished, but that isn't a wall.
He ain't getting a wall without Congress, or unless he violates the Constitution (which he might, but I don't think Congressional Republicans will like that).

Yeah, Metal Storm went out of business. Not sure if it was bad weapons tech or not. The company was bought out by Defend Tex and the weapons are still being worked with. So who knows.
The tech is out there.
Considering the effort and money that went into getting him here, we should have been expecting things to heat up fast. EVERYONE with sense knows he only has two years with his majority in power. He needs to be on the ball from day one to rig things up so he doesn't lose his power base. And he's going for it.
See, here's the thing. Martial Law might be watered down NOW, but if the Repubs get a strong enough majority to push through Amendments, it doesn't have to be for long . . .

He's going to have a fun time paying all the workers he hires for it without Congress. And unless he's willing to send troops into Mexico, I don't think they'll be offering up any of their cash.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Secret Service agent may face disciplinary action over her anti-Trump Facebook posts
Kerry O'Grady, the special agent in charge for the Denver district, also added "I am with her," a nod to the slogan for Hillary Clinton's campaign, to the posting.
O'Grady's comments were made in October, during the height of the presidential campaign and shortly after the release of a tape in which Trump made lewd comments about women. But they only came to light this week.
"Despite the fact that I am expected to take a bullet for both sides. But this world has changed and I have changed," O'Grady wrote, according to the Washington Examiner. "And I would take jail time over a bullet or an endorsement for what I believe to be a disaster to this country and the strong and amazing women and minorities who reside here."
In a statement, spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan acknowledged that the Secret Service is aware of O'Grady's comments but declined to say what actions were being taken in response.
“The U.S. Secret Service is aware of the postings and the agency is taking quick and appropriate action," Milhoan said. "As a matter of practice, we do not comment on personnel matters."
"All Secret Service agents and employees are held to the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct," she added. "Any allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and swiftly investigated.”
According to an administration official, the matter was referred to the Office of the Inspector General. But the Inspector General's office referred the matter back to the Secret Service for possible disciplinary action.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, O'Grady said she regretted the posting.
"It was an internal struggle for me but as soon as I put it up, I thought it was not the sentiment that I needed to share because I care very deeply about the mission," she said.

I guess she probably saw that one damn photo of some jackass torching a limo and decided to write off the whole movement. Never mind the fact that millions upon millions of people marched nationwide the very next day with nary a single arrest.note
Still though, good job. We need more people on the ground fighting the hearts-and-minds battle. It may not turn Trumplings, but it might win over the apathetic or swing voters.
