Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The National Guard, despite the name, isn't actually nationally (federally) controlled—most of the time. The Governor would have to sign off on that use of force, assuming the laws continue to apply.
Also, the pipeline originally meant to travel above Bismarck but that citizens of that city complained that the pipeline might endanger their water supply. (Go figure).
Heh,
. My first one. Is there a prize for that?

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives![]()
Fun fact: they already did redirect the pipelines. It was originally going to go through some white-people territory. The white people said "fuck no." The company said "fair enough" and routed it through Native American territory instead. The Native Americans said "fuck no." The company sicced dogs on them.
And who says the rules would apply? The GOP are already changing the rules. All they need to do is force through yet another bill.
They've already got militarized police using potentially lethal force on the water protectors. All they need to do is tell them "cool it with the rubber bullets and tear gas, bring out the real bullets."

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Canadian government is on board with Keystone. I don't like it, but we can't afford a confrontation with Trump at this stage.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.About the "militarized police" thing, the actual army has to check more boxes before breaking down doors and shooting (at least in the context MOUT and COIN) and soldiers actually suffer punishment for negligence.
There used to be a reason, we didn't gear up police with IF Vs and assault rifles.
But when all we give police is a hammer...
If Civilian Police officers were held to the same standard as Military Cops on bases, you'd solve the problem practically overnight.
If a MP did what regularly C Ps do, they'd be thrown in the brig and have the key destroyed, let alone thrown away.
New Survey coming this weekend!A very interesting tweet chain about being the resistance
: tl;dr: EVERYONE has to be on board.

Well...shit.
I hope they realize that the GOP and Russia would like nothing better than for California to secede. The rest of the US would lose one of their main bastions of resistance, and it would probably wreak havoc upon the US in general.
I mean, the guy behind Calexit lives in Russia. As with seemingly everything else, they're behind this too. Divide and conquer.
If California gets so bogged down with infighting and talk of secession that they forget to fight Trump...well, that was a real nice country we had once.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."California secedes and Trump imposes a water embargo on the new country, then reconquers California, suspends habeas corpus and starts jailing Dems as collaborators. Secession isn't going to happen; too dangerous.
And if CA secedes, New England will have to stand alone.
Madness and stupidity. Vermin like him are what's killing the Party.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Who's Cenk Uygar?
I mean, I actually think purging the Dems' ranks of all the spineless good-for-nothings should be a top priority when the midterms come along. But there's still a right way and a wrong way to go about things.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Cue Alt-Right and Neo-Cons who wanted all Hispanics gone to start crying in 3, 2...

No, but it's a hell of a lot of people, especially in a state as populous as California. And since it was considerably less than that not that long ago, it shows that the movement is gaining traction.
Cali's leaders need to start addressing this and explaining why it's a terrible idea. They need to get ahead of the message here.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

Also, the Gov. of Minnesota is 6 months younger then Trump, but this isn't the first time he's collapsed. He had corrective surgery on his back recently and it's been causing him problems.
