Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@No Name 999; 12 million people, that we can account for. 6 million was just the Jewish people.
@Fighteer: And those aren't the people to whom your image matters, nor does it really matter to the people to whom you are being magnanimous towards in this scenario. It's observers who are on the fence about you, and who might conclude based on the use of violence against your opposition, that both sides are evil, so why bother getting involved. It also matters to people having second thoughts about their side on the far right; showing you're willing to offer them a way out makes it more likely those doubts will turn into a genuine change of heart rather than doubling down because they're already in too deep to be forgiven.

While we're still on the topic of nazi punching:

@Gaon: Here's why they don't
.
Between 70 and 85 million died as a result of World War 2. Among them, between 26 and 27 million Soviets (counting everything from starvation to battlefield deaths to crimes againt humanity.)
While not all of them were the direct result of Third Reich policy, a whole heaping helping of them were.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Capsace, you continue to make apologies for people who will never apologize to you. I'm not taking your bait any more. Your philosophy would paralyze the progressive movement to inaction fueled by the inaccurate belief that their opponents ever intend to operate in good faith. Obama thought that way too, yet all his accomplishments were made when he ignored the right and pushed things through.
We are in an existential war for the soul of America. You might as well be a Republican, since you aren't helping and your line of argument is little better than concern trolling at this point.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
The appearance of taking the high road is what matters, not that you actually are doing so behind the scenes. Moreover, after you've made the gesture, all bets are off, and no holds are barred. By all means, if they refuse your olive branch, be as ruthless as you can to them without resorting to extralegal means, but always make the offer, and always make sure the public knows about it.

The House just passed a bill that would basically prohibit any new government regulations, ever. And allow the Fuhrer to roll back any he doesn't like without having to go through the usual process.
Boo. That makes the events in my story much more plausible, though...
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo, to ask a rather bleak question...even putting aside all the other potential disasters, looking at the state of things, is there any way that climate change doesn't end up causing utter global calamity?
I ask this here partly because of the aforementioned bill, which removes environmental protections. And because of right-wing governments around the world being either indifferent towards or actively supportive of climate change.

Well, it hasn't passed the Senate yet, so we'll see how things go.

By all account we're already past the point of no return. If the US does nothing for the next four years and the entire rest of the world enacts harsh carbon cuts, it'll already be too late.
Serious geoengineering or drastic action right now is pretty much the only means by which we're going to save our stupid, stupid species.

x5 There comes a point where you just get sick and tired of having the door slammed in your face. Extending the olive branch has resulted in nothing but us getting spit on and called dirty names by people who obviously don't want our help/sympathy/cooperation. Sometimes, you just gotta say, "Okay, if that's they way they want to do it, then fuck 'em and the horse they rode in on."
Then you need to grow a thicker skin. Make the offer first. When they refuse, inform them of the consequences and make it a second time. When they refuse again, burn their house down with them inside of it, but make sure to leave the door open for them to change their mind until they breath their last breath.

I don't think everyone is obligated to extend an olive branch to the opposition.
Particularly if, say, you're black and they're a white supremacist. People who do do something like that do it at great personal risk, and I don't think you should demand it of everyone.

Extending an olive branch doesn't necessarily mean letting your guard down, and obviously the average person cannot be expected to do more than prioritize their own well being, but that particular model is something I think those who intend to involve themselves heavily in the political process should strive towards.

Oh, I don't know. Part of me always did want to step into the world of Blade Runner. Just, you know, maybe not so literally.
If you're lucky, you may be just young enough to live out the rest of your natural life before everything goes kaput, or at least before civilization crumbles as we know it. Always look on the bright side of life, as they say.
