Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously though, without hyperbole, what does this mean?
Edit:
Ah, okay, thank you.
Also, Committee OKs Tillerson for secretary of state
.
And a 11-10 vote too.
Dammit, Rubio.

Let me remind you who the runner up to that position is.
Thank God he refused to shave his moustache.
'Murica.

I know you weren't responding to me specifically but:
Yes, that's right.
This is where I begin getting lost. The US has made similar arguments of resisting X-ism to stop elected leaders from other countries to enforces their dubiously defined will of the people. Yes, the will of facists is to hurt others, but I am more than unnerved by calls to stop, through violence, the enemy's ability to speak, no matter where they come. I have seen it done to us in latinamerica, no thank you.
To me it's not sympathy for his ilk, but rather a disagreement over what are valid tactics. I'd prefer conversion over violence.
It would be funny.

I get the desire to avoid violence, but I doubt you'll be converting any white supremacists. Extremists are not easily swayed, and I can't imagine it will be any easier now that their preferred candidate is in power.

Oh God! Natural light!I'd prefer Spencer and his cadre of hateful trolls shut the fuck up, and having a conversation has thus far done nothing but empower them.
So if ensuring they shut the fuck up by committing civil vigilantism helps, I'm happy. Either way he shuts up.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.![]()
Not often, but I'd argue it's more easy to defuse people like that by offering an open hand for them to reject than to try and crush them by force*, and there's always the outside possibility they'll actually be willing to reform themselves.
* Unless you're willing to resort to downright despotic and extralegal means which aren't even possible in a functioning democracy, much less as part of an opposition party.

How on earth would you persuade him to change his stance, anyway?

You probably can't, but you can avoid harming your image by at least going through the effort of trying; if as is likely the case the person spits into the hand you offer them, and you react calmly and dispassionately, you come out looking far better than if you run up to him and punch him in the face. Then there's always the outside possibility someone actually does have second thoughts because of an act of kindness by people who they perceived as their hated enemies.

The House just passed a bill that would basically prohibit any new government regulations, ever. And allow the Fuhrer to roll back any he doesn't like without having to go through the usual process.
This includes environmental protections, food safety regulations...
Day 4.
Or is it 3? Jesus.

My "image"? To the right, we're the Antichrist. It's hard to go much farther down from there.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There was a story posted some months ago about the son of the owner of stormfront (I believe his name is Lewis Black?) and how through contact with people of different views and experiences he gradually realized white supremacy was illegitimate and denounced it.
It's not impossible but also probably doesn't happen too often.

With each passing day I get more astonished the US doesn't have hate speech laws.
