The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If Wikileaks releases returns that prove Trump is working for Russia I legitimately won't know how to feel about them anymore.

It's expert speculation but it has been speculated that Assange is technically independent, he just really hated the Clintons and so was an effective stooge. I don't remember if any info found since then contradicts that.

[up][up] And Russia would probably just do it as leverage to keep Trump in line if he starts getting out of their control.

Trusting Wikileaks to do that? Seriously? I expected you guys to know better.

Back when they were handed Syrian regime emails, they deliberately redacted emails between Syrian regime officials and Russian bankers, and they threatened the journalists who discovered the redaction.

Wiki Leaks threatened to retaliate against the reporters if they pursued the story: “Go right ahead,” they said, “but you can be sure we will return the favour one day.”

Assange. Is. Not. Our. Friend.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Man, I barely cared about Trump's tax returns in the first place. Like, yeah it's suspicious that he's cagey about them while being open elsewhere, and yeah it's concerning that he's willing to break from tradition like that, but he's within his rights to not release them, and even if there's something really bad in there we don't know or suspect, what would it matter at this point? There's hardly gonna be anything worse than what we already suspect, and I would be surprised if there was anything that would make GOP impeach him.

But that said, Wikileaks calling for them shows that they have at least some people with them who aren't hypocrites, which is a good thing.

They've already made their choices. Calling on Trump to release documents that he can turn into another media circus to distract while he guts Net Neutrality or something is far too little, far too late.

It's been fun.

On the other hand the tax return thng corner him into the defense mode which is good, is hard to said "nobody want to hear about that" or the "Trump can do what he wants" get less credible each time.

Jared Kushner's brother, Josh Kushner, attended one of the Woman's March Rallies.

I don't know who either of those people are.

Jared Kushner is the guy married to Ivanka Trump. He's one of Trump's top advisors and apparently one of like two that he even listens to.

Who ever went on that Women's March Rally, please do me and everyone else there a favor and pick up your trash before you leave.

Thanks.

He just did. And then he forced them to issue an apology. For retweeting provable factual statements. Welcome to authoritarianism.

Also Trump (or one of his Cronies) tweeted that although he doesn't agree with the Protesters, he supports their right to Protest, only a few hours after Tweeting that if the Protesters were against him they should've voted against him.

Perhaps he's assuming that they're all members of either the silent majority that abstained from voting or the "buyer's remorse" group of Trump-voters who weren't that loyal to him anyway... the latter of which he probably assumes are a tiny minority of the group that voted for him.

So this "American Sovereignty Restoration Act" or whatever the hell they're calling it - the bill submitted that would withdraw the US from the UN. Which is an absolutely nightmarish idea for any number of reasons.

Apparently it's been submitted into every new Congress for decades, and gets shot down every time. But...it's never been submitted into a situation where the GOP control the House, the GOP control the Senate, and the President is the capricious puppet of a foreign dictator who wants to destabilize the world order.

[up][up]Well, with any luck, the fact that it's been over a half a month since it was introduced and it still hasn't been touched yet probably means that, again, no-one's taking it seriously. Let's hope it stays that way.

[up][up] Not sure - but again, it's Trump that really concerns me. Getting the US to do our own Brexit seems like it would fall in line perfectly with Putin's agenda.

[up] Fingers crossed. But I'm still calling my congressman about it tomorrow. I'll stop bugging him when he stops being an asshole.
