Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Glad people mentioned that. I just checked my Twitter account, and I'm suddenly a Trump follower, too.
That said, I've suddenly become an Obama and Theresa May follower as well, so I think this issue is a bit wider than just Trump.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp0Lk03cVvE
Wow.
So simple, yet so powerful.
Definitely going to see if I can help with the Obama foundation.
New Survey coming this weekend! While I haven't found hard numbers, it's looking like the attendees to the women's march in Washington DC actually outnumbered the Inauguration attendees. Metro usage is definitely up from what it was on Friday
.
Now this is obviously a powerful symbolic message that the people opposing Trump are many and are not just going to accept what his administration does. And while I haven't really researched this topic, I would be very surprised if a previous protest against a President held so quickly after they had assumed office was ever able to outnumber the attendance at the inauguration itself. Not in the past century certainly anyways, which makes it an important historical note.
However is above is not what I like most about the women's march outnumbering the inauguration. What I like most about it is that it will hurt Donald Trump's feelings, and I have become astonishingly petty when it comes to Donald Trump's feelings.
What the NSA was doing before was monitoring metadata — ie, information about calls and texts and the like. They never had access to the actual content of those messages.
edit — oh, and I was following @potus, and ended up following both @potus44 and @potus. I unfollowed @potus and haven't had it added back, or seen anything added besides @potus44.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. What I'm worried about is what Trump does when he gets his feelings hurt this badly.
I mean, it's possible he's in outright denial, because he's bragging about what an incredible turnout there was at his inauguration when in reality it was pretty pathetic. But this has to be getting through to him on some level. And when it does, he might go looking for payback.
Remember. His power is effectively unchecked right now.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."To every single one of the regulars here (lurkers or posters): bookmark this, and when you feel hopeless and like there's nothing else to do against Trump or the Republicans, as if they are unstoppable, READ THAT COMMENT. Because you all just stumped the Trump. Now it's not a matter of beating him, it's a matter of beating him again.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVDon't be so hasty. He's checked, just not by anything all that visible. Remember, the civil service is unlikely to be happy with their new president and, despite all complaints, the federal bureaucracy isn't enough to govern the country. It does alot of work through the states' civil services. If you live in, say, California, the state government is free to play Jackass Genie with the worst of his orders, (essentially what Texas became the poster child for during the last 8 years) so long as:
- their populations support the actions, and
- their willing to risk losing federal money and be on the receiving end of other kinds of pressure if they play their cards badly.
In essence, there's still means of defense while organizing for the next elections, even if Trump himself and his advisors are shameless.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesAt CIA headquarters, Trump boasts about himself, denies feud
He drew laughs from the crowd when he described reporters as "the most dishonest human beings" and claimed he'd drawn as many as 1.5 million people to his inauguration despite official estimates closer to 200,000 and repeated images of empty standing spaces.

New Survey coming this weekend!![]()
Fair enough. I didn't mean to imply that he was omnipotent or anything. I suppose what I meant was that he is way, way more powerful than any President should ever be. And the usual system of checks and balances doesn't really apply, meaning we're going to have to rely on less obvious and perhaps less immediately effective means of resistance.
Christ.

Yeah, I'm thinking of pulling back and focusing only on Trump's trade and foreign affairs stuff. Everything else is too depressing, and if I keep watching it I'm going to develop an unhealthy level of anti-Americanism (scary how fast that seems to be spreading here, and presumably the rest of the West/some of Asia. Hasn't been this bad since 03...).
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
