Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reports are suggesting that the new president has already made some changes to the Oval Office (normally it takes a while before this happens - Obama didn't redecorate until 2010).
The red drapes have been changed for yellow ones, the carpet is different and the Churchill bust has been restored. There may be other changes not yet spotted.
Goodness gracious Micheal Flynn's Son is a piece of shit.

I wonder if Mattis will be capable of putting him in his place.
I mean, I'm really averse to cursing out or hitting my own (hypothetical) kid courtesy of my upbringing, but if he were my charge (I sincerely hope I never do whatever led him to this) I'm not sure if I could stick to that.
Kickstarter campaign to fund outreach for Blood on the Mountain
in Appalachia in other places. For the uninitiated, Blood on the Mountain is a documentary on how coal companies have exploited - ruined West Virginia and its children who worked in the coal mines, or at least did before mountaintop removal caught on.
"While crowd
estimates are fluctuating and have not been confirmed, the DC Metro system posted on Twitter that there have been 275,000 trips as of 11:00 a.m. this morning. By comparison, 193,000 trips had been taken by the same time on Friday ahead of the inauguration."
From the March on Washington. Looks like the people prefer the protestors over Trump. So much for him representing America.
From that particular standpoint, it doesn't really appear to be sexism to the person saying it. It's very easy to come to the conclusion that things for women are mostly fine outside of some minor problems that'll be fixed before long, if that...if you're not actually a woman.
That's how people rationalize every oppressive system, it's always an isolated incident, always the focus on the offender's personal feelings, etc.
I mean I'm sure a number of women are opposing the March too, if we learned anything from this election is that we can't expect women to be in solidarity with one another any more than any other marginalized group.
I've been watching clips of the inauguration, and one thing stands out to me. It's tiny, it's barely visible given his position and the camera when it happens.
There's a moment when the camera is fixed on the doors, waiting for the two presidents come out, and there are two officers either side of the door fixed in salute position. There were in that position for a little while, and I was wondering whether their right arms were getting tired when Trump and Obama came out, talking to each other as they went.
Obama pauses at one point to step behind Trump so that he doesn't bump into the one officer's saluting arm, and salutes them both quickly as he walks by, and he does it without breaking conversation with Trump.
Trump didn't acknowledge the two officers at all.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I just got back from my local Women's March. Inspirational stuff. The real fight begins now.
Also, weird stuff is afoot on Twitter. I mentioned last night that people found themselves following Trump, despite never having done so. Those reports are spreading - but it's not only Trump, it's also Pence, Spicer, and Wikileaks.
And as if that wasn't creepy enough, some people are reporting that despite repeatedly unfollowing and blocking those accounts, Twitter keeps forcing their accounts to re-follow them. Plus someone saying that it won't let her tweet the route for the local Women's March, although that may be a glitch.
Twitter is blaming it on issues with migrating the POTUS account, but that doesn't add up in the slightest. If for no other reason than because half of these people were never following the POTUS account in the first place.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Maybe. But I think more likely it's either Twitter stroking Trump's ego, or it's the government itself exerting control over Twitter.
To stroke Trump's ego.
Remember, Trump's follower count is pitiful compared to Obama's. That must drive him up the wall. He's all about shallow displays of power and popularity.

Just checked, I just unfollowed @POTUS and @VP, as my avatar shows, I'm in Argentina. I was following the old POTUS and VP accounts so in this particular case it may be a migration bug or Twitter going "I don't know if you want to follow Obama/Biden or the accounts of the (vice)president of the US, so I'll set you to follow both".
Good luck.

I think one benefit to Trump and the GOP is, they don't have anything to offer their base beyond "we'll fuck them over worse" (by "base" I mean the people who vote for the GOP, not the people they serve). And many voters apparently realize this, which is why you see so many articles about buyers' remorse. And now Trump's screwing over people with mortgages and teasing Obamacare/ACA repeal.
