Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The NY Times
did a breakdown/analysis of Trump's speech. I hope there's no paywall this time, as it's rather interesting.
Without a path from protest to power, the Women's March will end up like Occupy
"...protesting grandmothers, daughters and mothers have the unique power to do what male protesters cannot—such as break through a line of national guard bayonets without being fired upon... [but] It is [the] difficult question—what comes the day after?—that every supporter of the Women’s March should be earnestly figuring out today.
Without a clear path from march to power, the protest is destined to be an ineffective feelgood spectacle"
Spoils the end but covers the main point
If any are going, this may be good advice, less this energy dissipate by four years' time. Also the march is international
.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesWell, if it makes you feel any better, buzzards are circling but at least Europe isn't going in unprepared
, for example: Prime Minister Theresa May said that she would tell a skeptical Mr. Trump how important NATO and the European Union are for European and world stability.
Also "Minas Morgul?"

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Someone shot a protester outside a failed tech reporter (it's easier than spelling his surname)'s speech at the University of Washington
. The injuries are apparently life threatening, and a person of interest is in custody.
Something something, freedom of speech, taxation with representation, de Tocqueville .
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI'm sure we'll fill the down ticket deficit by constantly insisting that you have to be the embodiment of Trump to win. That's sure to motivate good quality candidates to put themselves forwards.

Well, since the movement claiming to have an answer won't actually fashion us with one, why not?
Someone punched a certain Richard Spencer in the face
.
Trump has not actually resigned from his companies
. Surprised? Me neither.

(Emphasis added) After Trump? No you don't need that last bit.
Maybe not good quality candidates, but definitely electable ones.
On a more serious note, there are indeed some efforts being pushed to encourage voter engagement/mobilization such as SwingLeft
and #KnockEveryDoor
. Which does tie in to my question of "how do you get people to actually vote for you?"
What happens in this thread most of the time is merely an extension of the issue that complaining about people being to the right of Marx is a mite too popular among left-leaning online circles.

A disease can stay asymptomatic for years until the right conditions trigger it. I get the feeling all the necessary pieces were in place, and now that Trump is the president, you can unveil the insanity.
