The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Things don't just happen because the boss said so. "

Yeah, he is not going to get that and get used to it a lot because Donald is so dense to understand that principle.

I can attest to that. I work for a store. The corporate managers only want us selling extras (credit cards and bonus stuff) when prompted, but our store manager tells us to sell sell sell any time it seems like we might succeed. He breaks orders handed down to him, and expects us to follow his. Doesn't always work for him. So yeah, stuff doesn't happen just because the boss ordered it.

I am not going to fall in line. When I start seeing Trump's negative effects in my state, I'll judge whether I'll be safe helping the Resistance or not. If it looks like I'm likely to get shot for it, since my state overwhelmingly supported him, I won't make a move. If it looks safe, I'll call representatives, sign petitions, help spread the word. I don't think it'll be very safe. A lot of people in my state epitomize the very stereotypes holding us back, and we're in one of the worst economic positions in the country since Coal, soldiers, medics, and government jobs pretty much are our economy.

And any time I hear someone say "You have to respect the position of the President and fall in line" I want to pull a citizens' arrest for treason on them and force feed them a copy of the Constitution so they might learn by osmosis.

I don't know what's gonna happen first: Russia's coup of the White House, or Trump's ego causing him to do something so horrifically dumb that Putin yells at him enough to cause tension between the two (because no one tells Trump what to do).

Here's what I expect him to do, though: Dismantle all regulatory and, eventually, functional powers of the US government. Privatize all. Absolutely all. No governmental regulations of any business, so his billionaire buddies can celebrate their authoritarian fantasies in peace. Trump will be the ultimate neoliberal president, just watch. Watch, he will pull it off. Who will stop him? Who, up there in power, can resist the bribes?

It's all about money. Every cent has to go into his private economy, inherited from daddy and regurgitated like an abstracted anatomy of a grotesque horror movie monster. Putin likely pays him a lot of money, keeps him drugged up like his bitch. No, not "like." As.

Has there been any confirmation yet as to whether Trump will truly reject the presidential salary? Because if so, that means I can legally call him the first ever amateur president. Which I would love to do.

[up][up]If Russia's going to do a 'coup of the white house', they'd have done it already. If they haven't done it yet, they're not going to. There's a difference between staging a 'coup' and having the President in your pocket, and if they haven't got Trump yet, then they're not going to have him at all.

At this point, I just hope that the GOP prevents Trump from crushing the global economy under his protectionist heel. I think they will, NAFTA alone brings in a crapton of money.

As for domestic affairs....we'll see how the American masses respond to being fucked over by a kleptocracy straight out of the Gilded Age. If they keep voting Republican, my dwindling sympathy for the US will just run out. At this rate I'll be happy if Canada isn't embargoed, or has refugee camps on its border.

I expect a lot of baby with the bathwater solutions to a lot of problems that are either marginal, completely made up, or better handled by other things.

He's wanting to cut down on education spending. Not sure how much corruption there really is education itself, but let's face it. The GOP doesn't view the schools as a place to round out your kids. It's a place for job training. Expect arts to get cut and job skills to be emphasized. That and the bible.

Labor unions? There are cases where they've been harmful, like with jacking up dock worker wages in places like Boston, but things are better for most of the country with them than without. Expect those to be declawed as much as possible by Trump.

The Postal Service? He'll probably back the move to privatize it. Good bye what quality assurance it has at this point.

There's the racial and sexual issues, which we've already touched on and better minds than mine can talk about.

Shit like that is likely to get broken. Otherwise? I'll wait and see. I don't hold out hope for a good future, but I'm not going to bring this thread down to my level.

Well, something we had not yet down and something new and ready to stay...note .

President Obama (well former but that name and title actually go together) introduces his foundation, and LGBT Americans give "A Big LGBT Thank You to President Obama."

Apologies if I broke the tone, but I hope its nice to see who you're fighting alongside and for too. And what happens those rare times when you win.

As one who loves the ideal of full luxury communism but understands humanity isn't right for it, I will burn up inside over having to take a boss's shit. Hell, even my own boss doesn't support Trump. I think he's tired of dealing with his own bosses' shit too.

The extra fun part is that I'm pretty sure Trump fans' preferred porn sites will actually be throttled harder than... Tumblr.

So, the National Park Service has been banned from tweeting due to one of their accounts retweeting a comparison of crowds at Trump and Obama's inaugurations. You don't have to tell me about the amount of psychological projection these folks have.

Respect is a two-way street. You have to give some to get some. When Trump shows some respect for the Presidency (instead of using it as a vehicle for his massive ego trip), then maybe — just maybe — I might consider listening to his Republican backers/handlers. But until they can force him to STFU, straighten up and show a modicum of decency, I shall remain deaf to their BS.

If you're an American your constitutional obligation is to keep your eyes on politicians like a hawk and to shout out when you see something wrong. Period. When those people say "respect the position" they're saying the same thing as Trump saying "shut up and obey." They don't want citizens taking part in government. They want yes-people following the pied piper.

OK, time for some predictions. My read of Trump is that he's all about symbolic actions, and turning a profit. Anything else doesn't interest him. He will harm the country primarily through neglect and incompetence, but he won't actually do anything too extreme, like declare a national state of emergency giving himself dictatorial powers. That would be too much like work.

What he will do is try to renegotiate international trade deals and reduce the size of government. Look for him to eliminate or consolidate many controversial agencies, like the EPA, or HUD. The next budget will cut a lot of social programs (BUT, he won't touch Social Security or Medicare. He's not that stupid). And he will play along with the Republican Congress.

The Congress will actually try do more active damage. Those are the guys who want to significantly reduce the budget, reduce revenue, reduce taxes. If the effort to repeal Obamacare is any indication, they will largely fail. So they will fall back on what the Republicans always fall back on- hot button social issues. Thus they will try to outlaw gay marriage, criminalize protest, mandate creationism, etc. etc. The problem here is that symbolic gestures don't really satisfy their base. Once you mandate hetero marriage, then what? Working class whites still wont have jobs.

So 2018 will be a real opportunity for the Dems to make gains in Congress. The big question is how they will handle the possibility of impeaching Trump, should they gain a majority. There is no chance they will gain a majority, but it's political theater. It's a way to rally the base, so they might try to use it. If so, the country will further polarize. Opposing protest movements may turn violent.

Trump himself will have a variety of ways to deal with this. He could try what many presidents have before him, which is start a war with someone too weak to defend themselves, someplace with some strategic value, and an authoritarian regime for cover, in a region where we would like to have more influence. The Philippines would be perfect.

But the only thing that really matters to the American voter is the economy. If Trump can't get working class whites their jobs back, then they will turn on him faster than they turned on George Bush. That provides the Dems with an opportunity in 2020.

Will the Dems be able to take advantage of these opportunities? It depends on whether or not they can find a leader who can speak across class and racial lines, and actually present a coherent vision for American that makes sense and would benefit everyone. Someone with brand appeal, not tainted by corruption or scandal. I think I know who that leader would be, and her initials are M.O.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.
