Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also, as someone mentioned earlier, but it got lost in the bustle: DC Protests Against Trump Supporters Met With Tear Gas and Riot Police, DC
@Century: (Using " cause I don't want to type out the code for quoting): "North Carolina's elections are only marginally more free and fair than the likes of Belarus and Iran. (And I'm sure Georgia isn't far off)."
According to the map when you scroll down this page
, Georgia is even worse off than NC.
@Tactical Fox Good luck!
One thing that's giving me some comfort today - and note that I'm about to get really corny - the last century has seen two World Wars, a Great Depression, and the threat of nuclear war already. There were certainly people who lived through those times who thought that it was the end of everything. And sure, we have challenges that they did not have, but we also have advantages that they didn't.
This isn't to downplay what people are going to go through for the foreseeable future, but this isn't over yet.
And thus, every colored person loss 3 shades of color that day
I was going to post that myself. That is chilling stuff right there. It means a crackdown in BLM is almost inevitable. Will it just be increased restrictions on protests and whatnot - or arrests? Charge the leaders with domestic terrorism or something and lock them away?

Honestly, I almost think we could all use a little cheesiness right now.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."To add onto this, something I wanted to say earlier but got caught up in other things:
There is a difference between a Republican and a Trump supporter. Sure, I think the data points out that most of them voted for Trump without question, but some of them like Protagonist and that other user whose name I can't remember do not support him and did not vote for him.
So while I think most of us would agree that the Republican party, as an instituion presently, has some pretty major problems (to put it lightly), people can identify with the label of "Republican" for a lot of different reasons (some of them might be bad, but you know what I mean). I mean, Colin Powell still calls himself that not only to piss off the other republicans who don't like him, but because I think he believes in what the Republican party used to stand for. We still have at least a handful of republican politicians who are at least somewhat decently respectable people as well. They might not be fully aware of or agree with what the Republican party is doing now in the first place.
We can ask for reasons and point out objections, but it's hard to have a constructive conversation when we assume bad faith from someone based on a label. Keep in mind that by even posting on this forum most of us probably have an above average investment in politics. It would be nice if we could make an effort to calm down just a little. If the person is legitimately getting out of line they're going to get the boot anyways and we all know it.
I'm not a mod or anything but I had to get that off my chest.
Figures. I still remember the "Georgia does not need to be babysat" line when the VRA was in news some years ago. note
As for the better news, bon chance, Tactical Fox 88
Comparison of the crowd at Trump's inauguration with Obama's first inauguration.
I find this to be rather comforting. I don't think he has even a quarter of the attendance Obama got.
Purely hypothetical question: If the modern GOP ended up suffering a schism that formally splits the party into a "old/Eisenhowerist Republicans" party and "new/Trumpist Republicans" party, what names would you think they'd adopt?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
The Old Eisenhower Republicans are now mostly Democrats.
The Split would be between the Reagan Republicans and the Trumpeteers, but it would depend on who kicks out whom. If the Trumpeteers get kicked out in the next 2-4 years, they'd form something along the lines of the "American Party" or the "Liberty Party" or something (and funnily enough, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the Party Kanye West eventually runs under). If the Reagan Republicans can't get their party back, most of them would simply jump ship and become either Democrats or Libertarians, depending on their Neoconservatist or Libertarian leanings.

So, hey, Draghinazzo:
Here's my stance on this.
I cannot approach Republicans, or anyone who supports the Republican party, in good faith.
It is the official position of the Republican party that I am basically subhuman garbage who should have no rights at all.
I never chose to be gay, but people damn well do choose what political party they support. They certainly choose to support a party that openly desires to systematically remove my ability to get married, or get a home, or get a job, or even exist.
How am I supposed to look them in the eye and give them a fair shake when they've cheerfully signed off on the party that openly plots harm for me and all of my queer friends?
If you support the Republican party you are complicit in their actions.
So, if you're a Republican, I accept your, at the very best, apathetic acceptance of the destruction my rights, and hope you understand when I don't fucking like you.

Such a Trumpist party already existed. 'Twas called the American or "Know-Nothing" party
. The nickname as more fitting, and, interestingly it campaigned against an influx of Irish and German immigrants and as strongest in the northeast.
Though I suppose popular rhetoric no requires calling itself the "America Great Party" or something like that. A party built around Trump would essentially be a political machine/ ethnic bloc party. People might jut call it the Trump Tower in the same fashion as Tammany Hall.

@No Name
Basically, it's just going to be a general discussion. We agreed not to talk about national politics...yet and focus on things that affect our community and how we feel currently.
I'm not going to mention race until I'm confident that there is a consistent line of communication. And they are a bunch of older white gentlemen so I don't want to keep it too real quite yet lol.
I'm cautiously optimistic.
New Survey coming this weekend!
