The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Ace if it's any consolation, the actual business of running public education is mostly in the hands of the states. The federal level is mostly about determining how to distribute its share of the funding. Unless Congress were to somehow enact nationalization of the public school system (something event the die-hard Trumpists might find hard to swallow) the actual harm she could do is probably limited. The states that would jump on board are the states whose governments are already trashing public education.

@Department of Energy

As I recall, The placement of the nuclear arsenal under the auspices of the Department of Energy was originally to make sure they weren't completely militarized; place the power more on the public, rather than under a military office.

Of course, Trump probably doesn't give a damn.

I wonder how many Departments will survive. The republicans have wanted to kill some of them for ages; nows the best time.

Of course, Trump will want to keep them so he can give his minions nice titles and money.

So, having an opinion that isn't yours is trolling?
No ... but to date, the only people on this thread who have supported Trump have either been trolling, or clearly racist.
Increasing the cost of outsourced labor, reinforcing our border policies, and helping veterans back into society.
1) Building a wall does not, in any way, "reinforce our border policies." Nor will it do anything to stop illegal immigration. 2) You think the President of the party that wants to slash funding for the VA will help veterans?
I think more disconcerting about the direction he's headed in is that the White House website has removed their pages on LGBT rights, Civil Rights, Healthcare and Climate Change.
He's probably just waiting for Breitbart to rewrite them for "accuracy."

There is no excuse for supporting Trump. None. Dislike Clinton all you want, but there is nothing that could compel anyone to have positive feelings toward the heap of orange filth that's entering the White House that doesn't boil down to either terminal stupidity or being straight-up evil. The people who delivered him into this office at the exact moment it's most likely to irreparably screw up the futures of coming generations can go fuck themselves as far as I'm concerned.

if i need to explain why conversion therapy is bad, then I'm afraid our world views are too different for us to reach the consensus required to communicate.

Guys, can we try to engage in respectful discussion with Wolf at least? There's no need to have everyone here gang up on him every time he says something.

Also, Trump admitted that Draining the Swamp was a big lie. in front of his audience!!!

He said he loves the poorly educated.

He flipped on everything other than his hard on for Russia and his antagonism for Muslims and Latinos.

This man doesn't care for America, Wolf. And you fell for it hook/line/sinker.

Indeed. There are a few lines that may not be crossed (bigotry, disregarding counterarguments for example, as well as some more we are discussing in moderator chat), but they haven't been crossed yet.

On a really basic level, I'd have a hard time thinking a man like Donald Trump cares that much about serving the american people mostly because everything about his history and present behavior indicates he doesn't care much about anything but himself and making himself feel powerful and important in the eyes of other people.

Like, you get people accusing Clinton of being out-of-touch with the average american because she's a college-educated elite, but Trump is THE EXACT SAME THING. I don't see Clinton flaunting their wealth by lining everything with gold.

About all this doom....well is hard to said for me, im from venezuela, who have a lefty version of the republican party:incoherent, caring more about the other side, stuborn, etc and we have the WORST defeict in the world and hyper inflation that is eating your salary little by little and is led by a men who barely pass secondary school(in short, even more fucking unprepared than trump)

Also EVERYTHING you fear happen here except for the whole nuclear deal and yet...I actually optimist about the EEUU, because unlike here, were the oposition dance to Chavez finger, the dems have brand and fight him and is clear his popularity is not good at all which is going to cause problem A LOT.

dont give me wrong, Im worry about the damage he will do, most the efect this will have in voters: party that dosent recognize the other as legit, the idea of revolting against president one dosent like and so on but everytime I hear about how bad and doom it will get, I just saw my country as example and said...well, you got it better.

but that is just my opinion

Wish me fucking luck.

The White House (we're going to need to come up with a new name for it, aren't we) petitions site had their very first new petition added. It was a petition for Benedict Donald to release his tax returns.

People immediately started flocking to it, but are now reporting that it won't let them sign. The new administration is already dismantling it.

@Fox: Whoah. Good luck! And well done, too - we need more people taking an active role in local politics like you are.

Also, Mr.note  Wolfenmaus, if you do not mind, what is your background? note .

Also, at the very least, could, assume your countrymen are genuinely frightened and disturbed for a reason. We all watched the same campaign even if we took something different from it.

My grandparents note  lived long enough to experience widespread de jure discrimination, march for civil rights, and fight in Korea while being second class citizens at home. And he's one among many that watched Trump campaign on turning back the clock. I now, have to seriously wonder whether I can even begin to fill those shoes for the fight I'm expecting ahead.

As for me, I'll lay out a small part of my case. Yes, I expect a fight. President Obama had to reassure his staff that democracy isn't at end (possibly insincerely as I assume he knows history). North Carolina's elections are only marginally more free and fair than the likes of Belarus and Iran. (And I'm sure Georgia isn't far off). The President-elect thanked blacks for not showing up to the polls, not even going into his comments about my city in particular. I don't think I've seen a Trump rally without a Confederate flag flying or for sale nearby, and those same rallies are curiously devoid of minorities unless they're being assaulted. His tried and true "law and order" approach to policing means the black=criminal dog-whistle won't be going anywhere anytime soon. His cabinet appointment was rejected as too racist for a federal post decades ago.

And the funny thing is, I didn't put much effort into racial policy before this election. My main focus was on consolidating cities, food provision, and administrative excellence.
It's an interesting experience when a man campaigning to represent and lead you singles you out as vile criminals or barbarians living in hellhole cities and millions of your countrymen vote, at least partially on a platform of keeping you in your place...in 2016. And millions of my countrymen decided that my fatenote  was irrelevant to them. This on top of taking steps to silence dissent even before the election was over and essentially promising nothing but a "strong" leader who could finally beat back "those" people whereupon Heaven would mile upon America and "ordinary Americans" would be paving the street with gold again. And, again, it worked (And, I'll collect those sources...)

If I didn't consider this my country, I wouldn't be worried at all. Admit one to New Zealand. That "salt" means I have a stake here too...

EDIT: Apologies. Late Again. Seems to be a habit of mine...

It doesn't matter what you had against Clinton, flawed or not, she was FAR more experienced and competent than this incompetent, xenophobic, narcissistic, ignorant, infantile puke, and yet a big chunk of America chose to put THAT into the seat of power of perhaps the mightiest country in the planet, along with a whole troupe of ass-kissers that are just as ignorant and couldn't be more "Captain Planet villain" if they tried

America is going to suffer because of this, the ENTIRE WORLD is going to suffer because of this, and worst part is, too many people will deserve it for being ignorant enough to willingly make it happen

@HBP: I suppose we have so many nicknames for Trump, might as well have just as many for the White House.

The Orange House is an obvious one. Yeah, I like that.

Also, I didn't try to sign the petition. You know why? Because I didn't want to give the Orange House my name and address, while saying that I opposed Trump.

Seriously. I would be afraid to do that.
