Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also, I still want to hear what you think on his positions on climate change - namely, that he thinks it's a Chinese hoax.
Oh God! Natural light!Nearly everything you could accuse Clinton of being, Trump is basically guilty of as well, and more.
Trump has spent much of his campaign time and promises on appeals to fear and xenophobia, lobbying insults and fearmongering against black people, muslisms, mexicans, etc.
He might not personally care about actively screwing those people over but other people from the GOP not so much. His VP Pence has some pretty questionable stances on LGBT people, for example.

@Wolf: No one's supposed to be insulting anyone, and if someone does insult you you're not supposed to add fire to that situation because the mods will come down on everyone if a fight ensues. If you feel someone is attacking you you can report that post rather than fighting them in this thread. Everyone is expected to be civil.
@Noname: Anarchy is never a good thing, because there is no way to mitigate damage. Also, it is only ever a temporary condition. And anarchy ensuing from a collapse of the US government? Is going to have a lot of violence occurring.
@Mad Skillz: Especially Betsy DaVos. She's utterly incompetant, doesn't even know about the Individuals with Disabliities Education Act, WHICH IS A FEDERAL LAW, and guess what? she's probably going to get confirmed anyway.

@Wolfenmaus People are worried that his policies might have a negative impact on minorities, and then there's the matter of his immigration policy. Whether or not you think it was right that they were allowed in in the first place, you cannot simply deport 11 million undocumented immigrants without consequences. Any mass deportation effort will be a humanitarian nightmare in the best case scenario, particularly given many of the countries these people would be sent back to would be ill equipped to deal with a large influx of people. Then there's the matter of the general GOP policy of eliminating welfare, which disproportionately harms minorities due to the elevated rates of poverty among blacks and Hispanic Americas, and well, the xenophobia Trump was clearly feeding into for votes.

Hate Lives In A Small Town, and if you're Almost Human, it'll lead you To The Bottom Of The Sea.Enjoying the "salt" is pretty much the definition of a trollish motivation, or at least a lack of interest in honest debate. Doubly so when his defenses come from the Breitbart party line.
If we ever actually had a Donald supporter come in here who wasn't an ass, they might actually stick around here for more than a day.
I don't see how we can have faith when he keeps talking about how great oil and coal are, and how we need to stay on those. I can't see how we can fight back against climate change without a firm commitment towards clean energy sources, and I have seen nothing from Trump to suggest that this is a priority, or even something he's interested in at all.
Oh God! Natural light!Betsy Devos is going to trash public education entirely. Mom was at first optimistic because she also opposes Common Core, (Mom feels like it takes away from a teacher's ability to teach lessons in an interesting way or something) but then all the rest of the stuff that Devos has done to education in Michigan came out and Mom was disgusted.
@Wolf, so basically it seems you've bought into the idea that Trump's worst tendencies will somehow be held in check by others. Nevermind that he's basically set it up so that his staff will supposedly be fighting each other, much like how he's done in his businesses.
Also "America First" is basically feel good fluff and I very much doubt he's going to add more funding to NASA. I would like it if he did, but holy shit is Trump a flip flopper extraordinaire. It's almost as if no one remembers the time he changed his mind three times in one day over the issue of whether or not women should be punished for abortion.

It's entirely likely he will fund NASA better, because Trump is the kind of person who loves massive prestige projects like the space program, but he'd also be cutting funding to climate research at the same time, and a handful of redeeming features doesn't excuse the numerous other issues with his administration.

Besides, climate change (which looks very likely to be the cause of the apocalypse right now) wasn't being "kept in check" even under a President who gave a shit. It kept getting worse.
What happens under the President who thinks it's a Chinese hoax? You do the math.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."And the party who think it's a hoax because their billionaire donors think it's a hoax because if people stop firing oil and coal they'll stop making money.
Ah, and let's not forget the nuclear arms race 3.0, because apparently he didn't get the memo that it didn't work the first two times.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.I mean, it's been pretty obvious that all of Trump's appointees are nakedly the result of either nepotism or ignorance.
Trump's choice for the Secretary of Energy basically just found out that his job is at least partially about maintaining our nuclear arsenal, having before advocating for abolishing the department all-together, because fuck alternative energy and praise coal.
Ooh! Ooh! Don't forget him inciting violence against black protestors! And assembling one of the most racist and bigoted cabinets in generations! And refusing to relinquish his business assets, meaning he's already in flagrant violation of the Constitution!
Oh, and did I mention that he's Putin's bitch? He's Putin's bitch. I hope you'll all forgive the phrase.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."![]()

I mean, it's not like a minority registry has ever been put to nefarious use by a blustering, incoherent, isolationist demagogue.
In other, completely unrelated news, today is the 65th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference. If anyone needs me, I'll be having a drink.
