The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Wolfenmaus: If you have something constructive to say regarding the inauguration of Trump or his upcoming presidency, feel free to say it. Some of us, at least, will listen. (We probably will disagree, but we'll listen.)

Sarcastically sniping at other tropers (even if they are a little too gloom-and-doom for my liking) doesn't help anyone. Please don't do that.

any news on North Carolina's?

Not that I know of, unfortunately. But I found this remarkable, because it was a case of Republicans actually doing something...decent? I mean, that board was controlled by Republicans, and they killed the bill anyway.

[up][up] You're wasting your time, I'm afraid. Someone who can still unironically support Trump at this point is completely immune to facts and logic.

Wolf, you're generally not supposed to take the FIRST DAY OF YOUR NEW JOB off, as it is your fucking first day of work and you have not yet earned the right to some downtime. He's like the first president to do that sort of thing. I mean, it's predictable as he's not given a single shit about doing the job right so far, but it's kind of indicative of how he doesn't take this job at all seriously.

@Crimson Zephyr: Again I find your commentary on the matter to be nothing but pessimistic doomsaying. To the point where it's fucking obnoxious. If you're that down in the dumps you maybe need to a break from the news right now. This "we will never have anything like success again" is pointlessly unhelpful and does nothing productive. You sound like a broken record and are clearly not actually reading anything anyone else's posts. Next time you feel like posting nothing but "We are doomed" or whatever, you should maybe stop yourself after the first post. You're basically repeating yourself ad nauseum.

Pardon me if I'm skeptical of the GOP wanting to help veterans 'back into society'.

After they kept voting against a fucking veterans job bill to deny the Obama administration political points.

Oh no, a guy who's been browbeaten by the media, gave three rallies a day for months, and has been extensively prepared to deal with confidential information is taking a moment to breathe before he fully integrates.

It's hypocritical since he mocked Obama and said that the first thing he'd do is go on vacatation right after inauguration in 2012 and here he is doing the same thing.

Also he skips his intelligence briefings

Donald Trump is a corrupt flip flopping moron that said whatever he thought would get him elected.

I think more disconcerting about the direction he's headed in is that the White House website has removed their pages on LGBT rights, Civil Rights, Healthcare and Climate Change.

I literally said that I enjoyed his address. That isn't constructive, or at the very least more constructive than doom-mongering?

As for being immune from facts and logic, it's funny how it's coming from someone that supported a woman who's had people killed, takes money from countries that behead gays, and thought she could win the seat by reminding people she was a woman. I can very much sympathize with what Zephyr's feeling, because I've felt it myself and I'm feeling it right now to a certain extent. But, as cheesy as it sounds, we have to hold on to hope.

We all saw Rogue One, right? "Rebellions are built on hope."

The opposition is daunting and the fight will be hellish. It's going to be bad, maybe worse than we fear. But the resistance is widespread and determined, and we're not without power. We can win.

Saying you enjoyed something isn't as constructive as pointing out specific parts of his speech you liked, yes. "I liked this" isn't really an in depth analysis of anything, nor does it actually contribute to a meaningful conversation, Wolf. Pointing out specific things you liked, quoting those bits (which is admittedly easier if you have a transcript of the speech) would help make a more meaningful talk here.

This is, of course, assuming you care about having a meaningful conversation. If all you want to say is "i liked this" then that's your right, but don't expect much response if you don't give us something to respond to.

@M84: Let's please not even sound like we're trying to encourage a flame war. No reason for Tactical Fox or Wolf to end up banned over this, ok? Be civil instead of looking forward to fights.

Oh no, so sad that the majority of states care more about industry than grabbing more money from the Middle East.

...So they vote in the asshole who's been talking about shredding the Iran nuclear deal (gutting a great deal of Iranian industry) and whose Secretary of Defense (and entire party) have been gunning for a war with Iran for years?

That's some outstanding logic. That's cutting off your nose to spite your face levels of logic.

Anyway, for someone who actually wants to read a good inaugural address, I was recently pointed in the direction of FDR's inauguration speech from 1945:

Chief Justice, Mr. Vice President, my friends, you will understand and, I believe, agree with my wish that the form of this inauguration be simple and its words brief.

We Americans of today, together with our allies, are passing through a period of supreme test. It is a test of our courage of our resolve, of our wisdom, our essential democracy.

If we meet that test, successfully and honorably, we shall perform a service of historic importance which men and women and children will honor throughout all time.

As I stand here today, having taken the solemn oath of office in the presence of my fellow countrymen, in the presence of our God, I know that it is America's purpose that we shall not fail.

In the days and in the years that are to come we shall work for a just and honorable peace, a durable peace, as today we work and fight for total victory in war.

We can and we will achieve such a peace.

We shall strive for perfection. We shall not achieve it immediately, but we still shall strive. We may make mistakes, but they must never be mistakes which result from faintness of heart or abandonment of moral principle.

I remember that my old schoolmaster, Dr. Peabody, said, in days that seemed to us then to be secure and untroubled: "Things in life will not always run smoothly. Sometimes we will be rising toward the heights, then all will seem to reverse itself and start downward. The great fact to remember is that the trend of civilization itself is forever upward; that a line drawn through the middle of the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward trend."

Our Constitution of 1787 was not a perfect instrument; it is not perfect yet. But it provided a firm base upon which all manner of men, of all races and colors and creeds, could build our solid structure of democracy.

And so today, in this year of war, 1945, we have learned lessons, at a fearful cost, and we shall profit by them.

We have learned that we cannot live alone, at peace; that our own well-being is dependent on the well-being of other nations far away. We have learned that we must live as men, not as ostriches, nor as dogs in the manger.

We have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community.

We have learned the simple truth, as Emerson said, that "The only way to have a friend is to be one."

We can gain no lasting peace if we approach it with suspicion and mistrust or with fear. We can gain it only if we proceed with the understanding, the confidence, and the courage which flow from conviction.

The Almighty God has blessed our land in many ways. He has given our people stout hearts and strong arms with which to strike mighty blows for freedom and truth. He has given to our country a faith which has become the hope of all peoples in an anguished world.

So we pray to Him now for the vision to see our way clearly, to see the way that leads to a better life for ourselves and for all our fellow men, to the achievement of His will to peace on earth.

Re: gerrymandering. The worry now is that the GOP will use their newfound power to just change the rules, of course. All it takes is an executive order from Fuhrer Trump, or a bill forced through Congress, or a gavel struck by the now-stolen Supreme Court, and that fight might be overturned.

Personal attacks and whatnot are a great way to get banned, and the moderators tend to be very strict about clamping down on lines of conversation that tend to go there. Don't get me wrong, it'd be nice to actually have someone here who supports Trump at least to the point of being willing to defend him and his policy for the sake of having debates that aren't completely one sided/involve someone (frequently me) playing devil's advocate half-heartedly.

@ DC protests, several networks are reporting that small bands of anarchists are engaging in looting and property destruction. Tear gassing started after the initial looters were arrested and a group formed afterwards that went on to confront/attack police with rocks in an "effort to free" the arrested bunch.
