The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thumped: Wow. That was rude. Too many of this kind of thump will bring a suspension. Please keep it civil.

@Crimson, political nilhism isn't a very constructive position, seeing as the courses of action that stem from that stance—in order of increasingly drastic responses giving up on politics, fleeing the country, comitting suicide—are just ways of running away from our problems rather than solving them. You may very well be correct that the United States is doomed, but we have no way of knowing that from where we stand.

Doesn't really matter if democracy is dead. Even if it is, I'd rather go down swinging than give up and accept fate.

Not taking that troll bait, thanks.

Anyway, I've voiced a pessimistic attitude before, but I still want to echo what others have said. We have not lost. No matter how bad it looks, we have not lost. Not even close.

But if we give up? If we despair? That moment, that exact moment, is when we have lost.

Fun fact: the MAGA hats sold at Trump's inauguration — where he reiterated his promise to "Buy American" — were made in China.

If the above is an actual Trump supporter...eh, i have no real issue with them posting here. Though I do wonder if they will keep posting here after Trump's administration almost certainly fucks things up.

So, having an opinion that isn't yours is trolling? Alright.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to this presidency. If not only because of the wholly irrational explosions of salt from his detractors, but because his policies sound good for our industries. His inaugural speech was well-made, and I hope he proves all my expectations.

It looks bad. It looks awful.

But so much is at stake. If we don't at least go down swinging, then shame on us.

Nothing is impossible. We can turn this around. Unless we give up.

Then again, you also said you voted for Trump just to "stick it to the liberals" which is.... not mature.

[up][up] My point is more that it's taking time off the literal day after he officially has the job. I can't help but view that as an indication of how seriously and responsibly Trump takes being President.

Especially not since he spent the last two and a half months treating all the accusations of corruption against Clinton as a job description.

The reason it's being brought up is because it isn't normal. And anyway, he has literally failed to do a big chunk of his job so far. All those many, many, many open positions? He's supposed to have made some headway on filling them. He hasn't. He's nominated people for the top positions, but nothing else, and those departments literally can't function without those positions filled.

Increasing the cost of outsourced labor,

If you mean tariffs, congrats say hello to a trade war. And since you're a gamer, say hello to $100 video games.

Oh and Trump's businesses also outsource jobs so...LOL

reinforcing our border policies,

Ignoring that Obama deported the most than any other modern President. Most immigrants here illegally still do so because they're Visas expire. And even then, boarder hopping is the symptom, not the disease. It would be better to go after businesses who hire them, which the GOP won't allow.

and helping veterans back into society.

His last veteran fundraiser pretty much fucked over vets to pay his rich buddies

So oops
