Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I as the article and One coment about people in the Rust Belt caught my atention
" Problem is that they all will deny supporting Comrade Donnie after he fucks it all so bad in 4 years. They’ll be like all the Good Germans Allied troops encountered as they marched from the Rhine to outside Berlin. Turns out most were happy to be liberated from Hitler who they never really liked anyway. The Groupies Of Putin will all blame Comrade Donnie for the mess and claim that they tried harder to stop him than the Democrats did. Support for Comrade Donnie will drop like the W stickers off of SU Vs in 2006. Also, the Groupies Of Putin are beyond shame, anyway. They have digressed from W to Palin to Trump. They’ll find some one more fucked up than Trump in 2020."

It's normal because it's describing why the leader is being an ass. Assery is chronicled here

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot@boris: Democrats voting for Trump were a relatively negligible sector of the population. Far more of a problem were people that simply stayed home because they've lost faith in the political system, which is something I think was a very significant part of why minority turnout was down and slightly more in Trump's favor compared to Romney. That disillusionment is what we have to break through if we want to win the next election, and the center has little to no goodwill left.

@167671 De Marquis
Telling people the truth about why their lives apparently suck? Yeah, it's been tried. It doesn't work for a lot of people.
Coal workers for example are probably less likely to vote for the candidate who says "The coal industry has no real future. Your job security is never going to improve. You're better off retraining and seeking a new job in renewables or something." if another candidate says "I'll bring the coal jobs back!"

It doesn't work because the center has pretty much lost whatever goodwill it once had before the great recession; when politicians come out and say that, rural American thinks they're lying, which isn't helped by state level politicians looting funds meant for retraining initiatives for various other projects.

That, and it doesn't help that truth in the election for them was everything I agree with, evident by the amount of complete morons who think that Obamacare and ACA are two different things.

Do you really think that? With Trump in office the democratic base is not going to get more moderate, not in the slightest, and if the party expends the effort necessary to crush the populist insurgency within their own ranks, the infighting will help the GOP further consolidate power.
The democrats desperately need grassroots activism and genuine popular enthusiasm, and they won't be able to mobilize that if they cling to the center in a time when political norms are clearly shifting.

If the populists keep repeating themselves instead of actually coming up with something free of magical asterisks, they might as well go join the Green Party.

I'll never use his full title if I can help it.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
x6 The US isn't even facing a major military threat right now... this is a bad sign, unless they just think it will boost the economy (ie. line their pockets)?
More about the White House site: health care and civil rights references are apparently gone now, too.

@Krieger: The center can either try to meet the left half way and produce a coherent policy free of those unpleasant little asterisks (the real ones rather than things that are merely unpalatable to top democratic donors), or they can plug their ears, cover their eyes, and cling to the hope that the breaking point which will see them removed by force never comes, which is precisely what was done in places like Italy, Germany, and Russia during the early 20th century, in contrast to the United States and other nations which underwent major political shifts during the same period.
