The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Populism" is what spread the "Crooked Hillary" memes that helped cause so many Democratic voters to stay home. That aside, the fact that, in our system, it takes 4+ million more D votes than R votes to get a D President elected, due to how screwed up the Electoral College is, is the biggest single problem.

Eh, in this analogy the hyenas would be more like the Trump supporters who helped a tyrant come into power thinking he'd give them what they wanted. Only to be screwed over because the guy is too inept at actual governing and leadership.

I'm at the point where the mob literally swarming the stage and dismembering Trump with their bare teeth would be as welcome as can be

Heck, ANYTHING would be welcome if it stopped this from being a thing

That would then result in the secret service opening fire into the mob and martial law being declared. And the long-term consequences of such an event don't even bear thinking about.

Trump must be removed through legal means. Anything else invites utter chaos.

Let's not overlook the elephant in the room. In both the 2000 and 2016 elections, the Republican President was basically put in office by anti-democratic institutions as well as organs of the state. But at least in 2000, they waited until the election was actually over to put the thumb on the scale.

Let’s put this simply and clearly: the FBI stole the election, on behalf of the minority candidate.

Here is what we now know:

1) Our domestic security forces were investigating both Clinton and Trump

2) Clinton was being investigated for maybe improperly storing work emails on a private server, which is a trivial offense. Not only was it trivial, but by the summer the FBI and DOJ had publicly concluded that charges could not be brought, meaning the investigation was for all intents and purposes closed.

3) Trump was being investigated for being in cahoots with a foreign dictatorship which was hacking Clinton’s campaign, and this investigation is still ongoing even as he is sworn in to office.

4) The FBI at no point mentioned to anyone they were investigating Trump, and even went out of their way to leak to the media that Trump was not being investigated.

5) The Director of the FBI chose to inform the American people by letter to Congress (i.e. the opposite of a leak), in late October (the platonic ideal of an October surprise, so you know it was intentional) that they had found troubling new evidence in the investigation of Clinton which required the investigation to resume.

6) This letter was a violation of (a) longstanding FBI policy; (b) longstanding DOJ rules designed specifically for the purpose of preventing the FBI from interfering in elections and (c) the Hatch Act.

7) The FBI at the time had no way of knowing that the emails were relevant, and indeed, from all indications, must have known they were probably irrelevant.

8) The emails were quickly and easily determined to be irrelevant.

9) The FBI was in communication with members of the Trump campaign about the Clinton emails and had given Giuliani a heads up that they were going to leak the story

10) The FBI knew Clinton was being hacked by Russia, and were also investigating Trump on suspicion of being involved but did virtually nothing to warn Clinton – essentially left a voicemail.

Conservatives were making fun of John Lewis because it turned out he boycotted Bush’s first inaugural too. But the joke is on Republicans, who literally cannot win presidential elections in a legitimate fashion. This is the second straight Republican president who was awarded the presidency by an organ of the state, and not by voters.

Trump is not a legitimate President. He must be resisted by legal, peaceful means. But he must be resisted.

@R Bluefish TBF to Trump (ugh), that line was only uttered after Palpatine outright declared himself Emperor.

And even now, I can't see that happening with everyone just going along with it.

Also, that all eventually ended with the Emperor tossed down a reactor shaft.

If Trump is Scar, then clearly Judge Frollo is a Composite Character of Pence, Bannon, and Sessions - a emotional and sensitive man seeking refuge in authority and religious zealotry to justify their morally objectionable actions in spite of being fully aware that they go against the actual tenets of the religion.

Putin has been an autocratic despot for some time now. To the point where murder of his political opponents or dissenting journalists is nigh state-sanctioned.

^^^ No one said they seized control. They said Russia interfered with the elections by leaking damaging information/benign information in damaging ways, possibly while coordinating with the Trump campaign.

Strawmanning isn't looked upon favorably here.

Uh, heads up people - the House is apparently now in session. During the inauguration. But it's closed to the press.

What in the hell are they up to in there? What evil shit are they doing now?

Reminder: Erik Prince, Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump may have worked together to force Comey to make his now infamous statements days before the election. Yes, forced. I still think the rat bastard has no spine though.

It's actually quite amusing how Malaysians ostensibly supporting the Malaysian opposition are insisting that the world consider Trump legitimate despite every tactic the GOP used to get Trump elected being more subtle versions of what's used by the ruling parties here.

[up][up]Trump is still heavily leveraged by the Russians - see the Bayrock group. Even without the kompromat that is alleged to exist, there's no telling how willing the Kremlin is to pull the strings.

Speaking of Comey, what became of that hearing where several Democratic Congressmen came out utterly furious in a way that suggestion the discovery of treasonous behavior on part of Comey?
