Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A silver lining for schadenfreude if nothing else..."We Stand United" Was the Celebrity Rally Trump Wishes He Could Have
.
"On what might have been the last night of America as we know it, more than 20,000 New Yorkers filled Central Park West and nearby streets to take comfort in each other and express their defiance of the incoming regime..."
"“We Stand United” may have embodied much of what the deplorables hate about the cosmopolitan coasts, but I for one am past caring. “Our cities and our towns are the authentic America,” said de Blasio. “The open and compassionate America. The hopeful America.” He’s right. The other America can have Jon Voight and 3 Doors Down."
And I'm watching the inauguration. I may need to keep a vomit bucket nearby, but its intel if nothing else. If I learn just one iota of something to keep that inauguration from becoming a coronation...
Also, "School of Soros?"

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyAs far as Tulsi Gabbard goes, she opportunistically jumped aboard the Sanders train at the height of Sandersmania. The fact she endorsed Sanders was all some of his fanbase needed to make her into a progressive darling, despite her holding views in the past that would make them decry anyone else as a DINO who needed to be purged from the party.
As for the inauguration...nope, not watching. Not intending to watch Trump take a victory lap.
Honestly, I just like the moniker "The Resistance." Simple and to the point.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent.""We’re now learning that President-Elect Trump wanted a full Soviet-style inaugural parade, with tanks, missiles and missile launchers. The Pentagon nixed that idea but agreed to a jet fighter flyover. In an interview published Wednesday morning Trump had spoken about his desire to hold military parades during his presidency. But this is the first sign he had tried to hold a Soviet style military parade for his inauguration.
The Pentagon was reportedly not only concerned about the symbolism of such a show but also had more practical concerns about whether tanks, which weigh over 100,000 pounds would do permanent damage to the roads."
My personal opinion? Trump’s presidency is, from both a democratic and procedural standpoint, no more legitimate than the Pinochet regime in Chile, or the Ulbricht regime in East Germany. And should be treated as illegitimate from the start.
Soros' Spawn?
If I'm not mistaken British tanks have rubber track pads for those occasions when they want to avoid tearing up the road as they go. I don't think the US Army sees breaking those out for this is an efficient use of resources.
The best part is, when this is all over and we retake the country, we can just flip the sigils back over. The American Flag will be right-side-up again, and the starbird, which symbolizes resistance and rebellion, will be upside down.
Note: I don't mean literal rebellion. I mean, we should be taken symbolically

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youTrump is absolutely an illegitimate president. Hillary Clinton is the only rightful POTUS, and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
As for the fact that he wanted goddamned tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue...hey! Trumplings! Any cause for alarm yet?
Hear, hear!
Then comes the First Order, of course...

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."About the Pentagon's response: In other words: "we could if we really had to, but we don't want to bother putting anything special on just to massage your ego — also, the roads need fixing if they can't take the breadth and weight of a standard tank: dude, you might want to look at that".

Y'know this past year has gotten me thinking about the flaws of democracy and of populism. Especially populism, for obvious reasons. I was trying to think of the perfect visual metaphor for everything wrong with populism.
And of all things, I was reminded of a random Oglaf strip. One of the SFW ones.
Disgusted, but not surprised
Although even Scar had the popular vote. Granted, he bussed in a bunch of hyenas to rig it. And by the end of his term they were tired of his shit. Then they ate him alive.
And if anyone wants to complain about spoilers...no. The movie is...Jeebus, 23 years old?
God, I feel old.

Also, Pride Rock was a monarchy. The king was dead, the heir was missing - presumed to be also dead at some point - so the Evil Uncle was the next in line.
That wasn't even Scar's fault though.
And let's not get into the rather awkward race relations in the Lion King? It would have been different if a large Black population, comprising a majority of the US population had voted Scrump into power hoping he'd split the lion's share of basic necessities among them.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI feel more like this is the end of Revenge of the Sith, honestly.
Everybody made fun of it at the time, but you know what? "So this is how liberty dies - with thunderous applause" as actually a damn fine bit of dialogue.
Let's be careful not to get off-topic here, though. We've been warned about that before.

Heh, that's probably the best proof Trump doesn't really have billions to spend. He'd have hired a lot more seat-fillers, otherwise.
