Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't understand why people are calling Tulsi Gabbard a DINO. She's a proponent of increasing the funding of SS and Medicare, she's Pro-Abortion, Pro-Gay Rights, Pro-Native Rights, Pro-Immigration Reform, she's against the Dakota Access Pipeline (Hell, she was protesting with the rest of the Vets there when that was happening), she's against War and Drone Strikes, she's Pro-Bernie Sanders.
Since I'm a Libertarian and not a Democrat, what actually makes Tulsi a "DINO"? Not wanting to invade Syria? Potentially wanting to work with Trump?

Okay, I get thinking the USA is a bully. It's totally understandable, given the shit this country has pulled.
But to assume that other countries pulling shit against the USA are doing so out of inherent goodness and justice? That's bullshit.
Especially Russia. Geopolitics has been dominated for decades by what is essentially a longrunning pissing match between Russia and the USA. They bring out the worst in each other.

Disgusted, but not surprisedFor some people that itself is a crime worthy of expulsion from the party, so I suspect that's the reason.
Don't get me wrong, I think she represents several things wrong with the far-left, but the idea that she's to the party's right is absurd.

If that were enough of a reason, people would be hating on Keith Ellison a lot more than they do on her.
The impression I get of Gabbard is that she's a shameless opportunist. She says whatever she thinks will get her ahead in politics — she has no real principles. She started out as a grifter, and she's a grifter still. In many ways, she is everything HRC's critics accused HRC of being.
Maybe that's not enough to get one labeled a DINO. But she's still not someone to be trusted with more power.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYou sure you don't mean a democratic party Kellyanne Conway? I think the Trump comparison requires a very very low bar for one to crawl under.
In all seriousness, I know nothing about Representative Gabbard besides what I could gleam from a quick Wikipedia skimming, but if she's capable of surfing the political waves with such expertise, shouldn't she at least be near the 2018/2020 campaign planning team?

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
I'll put it this way — if she somehow ends up on the Democratic party ticket in 2020...I'll still vote for her over Trump, but I'll be very unhappy about it. Since I doubt very much that the GOP and/or Trump will be able to redeem themselves by then.
I don't actually think Conway is that much better than Trump, though she has at least been consistent on one position: hating HRC. I definitely don't agree with said position one iota, but I kind of respect that she has at least stuck to a position. About the only position I think Trump has stuck to throughout his life is that he doesn't like China very much — not that this stops him from buying Chinese steel or borrowing money from China's bank.

And he's trading one imperialistic capitalist Asian country (China) for another (Russia). Oh, but the other is primarily White (White Asians do exist, though outside of the Middle East (Probably due to being Islamic) they aren't regarded as a separate race from North America and European Whites the same way "yellow" and "brown" Asians are. Russians and people from Western Asian countries are White Asians), so it's OK according to him...

If he does get re-elected, then that would mean that America is at least doing alright. Considering how despised Trump actually is, America would have to at least be doing okay for him to have a prayer.
Either that, or the Voter Suppression gets out of control and/or we've basically established a One-Party State.

Five bucks says that regardless of America's prosperity in 4 years, Republicans will have gutted voting rights and turned the US into an effective One-Party State regardless.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryTulsi Gabbard is a tankie.
That's enough of a deal breaker for me.
I can understand working with dictators because that's all there is, but going out of your way to declare that someone who ripped the heart out of their own country because they feared losing power did nothing wrong is right out in my book.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
I mean hell, even most Russians probably don't hold that much of a rose-colored view of the times under Stalin. Heck, they probably don't particularly love Putin either and mostly stick with him on the basis of "he's still better than the opposition".

Disgusted, but not surprised

None of that is being Hawkish...
She may well be an Islamaphobic pro-Russian Assad-supporter but that's not being a Hawk, that's being Islamaphobic and pro-Russia.
Hawks are by and large anti-Russia and pro-toppling dictatorships (well pro-war, but wars against dictators are still wars).
She's part of the hipster left it would appear, she considers the US the international bad guys (a debatable but understandable position) and anyone who opposes the US (Russia, Cuba, etc...) to be the good guys (an absurdity). That's not being Hawkish, it's being a hipster.
