Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives@Blue Ninja 0: I'd argue the most corrupt Government America had was during Warren G. Harding's (The 29th President, after Woodrow Wilson and WWI) Administration. Several Scandals (such as the Teapot Dome Scandal) and Greedy Government Appointments (such as his Director of the Veterans Bureau, Charles Forbes) really damaged the Country's ability to Govern and stole Millions of Dollars from Tax Payer funds. The man also Gambled constantly (even losing Fine China in the White House due to Gambling Debts) and had several Affairs while in Office.
Time will tell if Trump's Administration is just as bad as, or worse then, Harding's.

I think I've heard people draw comparisons between Trump and Harding before. The biggest difference in my eyes is, Harding didn't have the technology to actively destroy all life on Earth. Nor was there the threat of him passively dooming all life on Earth through ignorance and indifference.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."California's Democratic Party has been taken over by the Sanders branch.

As long as they don't go full "Herbal Tea Party" as Ambar has called them, I wish them luck if they use the position to get more dems in power through the US.
Edit: I don't think Sanders himself would endorse Calexit, but then again, there are people who call themselves "Sanders supporters" but only support him as long as he says what they want, and when he says something they disagree with (like endorsing Hillary) they are like "he didn't mean it, it's just pandering to the DNC".

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVLongtime Democratic activists, used to low-turnout caucuses in which only party regulars show up, were stunned by the long lines they faced this year. One party strategist in Sacramento said he waited 45 minutes in line before being able to vote, when he was used to walking in and out in the span of five minutes.
The surge in turnout, and Sanders backers’ success, caught the attention of elected leaders in Sacramento.
“There’s a lot of energy in the party right now. We need to move really quickly to harness this energy,” state Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D) said in an interview, marveling at the turnout in his Los Angeles-area district.
In addition to the letter sent to my Rep, I just sent one to my Senator also, urging her to filibuster Every. Single. One. of Drumpf's cabinet picks.note
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswSo, I was reading that post a couple of pages back that linked to the article reporting on Perry's confirmation hearing
, and I spotted this comment in the article (by Perry):
So, Republicans favour small government and oppose big government.... except when they don't?

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Yeah. I can see that.
You know, it's a funny, and somewhat surreal, thing. I was given the The West Wing box set for Christmas. I've never seen this show before and I didn't ask for it. Some people who know me well said they got fed up of waiting to see if I'd ever pick it up and so bought it for me. I've reached Series 4 right now (Bartlett's reelection campaign against Governor Ritchie).
Normally, I wouldn't compare a television show to real life (except for Yes, Minister which is well-known for having parodied real life extremely well, as commented on by both politicians and civil servants (and, in fact, turns out to be rather on the ball about the Russia Scenario - albeit using East Germany rather than Crimea)). However, in the wake of 2016, some of the storylines have been jumping out at me like a jack-in-the-box.
The writers basically predicted exactly how a Trump-type candidate would wage an election campaign, and how successful that would be. Unfortunately, they have too much faith in the ability of the American people to rally around the 'right candidate' at the last minute to vote Bartlett back into office (but only by making Bartlett a mixture of Hillary and Obama - Hillary's frightening competence and experience combined with Obama's charisma, oratory and 'people person' image).
I find myself reflecting as I watch it that, sometimes, fiction writers do get it right on the money... and at other times, the sole reason they get it wrong is because they see exactly what can go wrong and how it will go wrong but let their faith in people override their instinct of how it would really end up if done in real life.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.... Is the Sanders takeover of California's Democrat Party going to have any tangible effect on the Democrat-dominated government?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. If the Sanders branch can start functioning in actual reality, great. Until then, I don't consider Sanders to have had a good effect on the party, and frankly, if he hadn't decided to make the party into part of this evil, monolithic establishment he had to fight I doubt we'd be in this mess.
And after what he just pulled with Booker, I'm finding it hard to like him.
With all of Trump's picks and talk of Calexit I'm starting to think the coastal states being a completely separate government from the mid-west would be a good thing. They have the most money and give more to the red states. It is absolutely stupid, but maybe less stupid than Drumf's personal fiefdom.
