Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, Republicans are hard at work trying to criminalize peaceful protest.
Or, as in the case of North Dakota, just make it okay to kill protestors so long as you go "oops" afterwards.
A reminder for all people. In the oddly plausible event that Trump does not show for his own inauguration...he still becomes president. The swearing of the oath is simply a formality, and the president-elect will, assuming he's alive and in decent health, get the presidency regardless.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)If #Thanks Obama isn't trending on Twitter tomorrow, I will lose faith in mankind.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Trump and his fears of legitimacy: Well, given the amount of people in New York's more privileged circles who thought him to be nekulturny even before The Apprentice, I'm not surprised.
Well, I guess we do see what those who still believe themselves temporarily inconvenienced millionaires want to be after all.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot![]()
I have some left, ironically for a bureaucrat in training its mostly reserved for a few in the private sector.
On another note, if Trump destroys the Canadian economy; keep in mind that Canada (and the rest of the world) can hurt you guys right back. Nothing personal, but we aren't going down alone.

I don't want to watch my country go into a depression, but I can darkly smirk while drinking unsafely if the Rust Belt burns thanks to Canadian counter-tariffs.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. And yeah, using that sort of tone isn't going to help with the whole "make America respected again".

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesTrump and Trumplings are under the assumption that winning or success in of itself means they deserve respect, rather than, you know, actually acting respectfully and having honor or good sportsmanship. Like that one woman who got triggered into a rant about how because she voted for Trump she deserved special treatment at a store. It doesn't matter if they cheated or inherited their fortune, all that matters is that they succeeded, so everyone should just shut up and do as they say.
For all the conservative talk about succeeding on merit, it's really a case of their ends justifying their means. Conservatives and Trumplings will deny up and down that it's even possible someone could become successful through exploiting the system and cheating. As long as they're white, of course.
I keep saying this shit, but these people truly believe in Might Makes Right, and I imagine that it REALLY pisses them off when it doesn't work that way. I think that's why these kind of people really hate progressive changes, because "losers" refuse to just grovel to the "winners" in power. It's a matter of pride. When someone from the "losing" side ends up winning, it is a massive blow to the winner's ego because It de-ligimitizes the winners "win." Trump despises Obama because Obama had the kind of approval and love from the people Trump covets despite being a black man in a country constantly struggling with race relations.
It's like the tortoise and the hare; if the tortoise won, then the hare must have REALLY sucked.
