The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Axios' interview with Trump on Tuesday. They think he's been sobered since some of the heavier briefings...

Trump said he likes his briefings short, ideally one-page if it's in writing. "I like bullets or I like as little as possible. I don't need, you know, 200-page reports on something that can be handled on a page. That I can tell you."

Nah.

Politico Magazine: Putin's Real Long Game

Trump should understand, regardless of what the Russians did in our elections, he already won the prize. It won’t be taken away just because he admits the Russians intervened. Taking away the secrecy of Russian actions — exposing whatever it was they did, to everyone — is the only way to take away their power over the US political system and to free himself from their strings, as well. Whatever Putin’s gambit was, Trump is the one who can make sure that Putin doesn’t win.

Yeah Sanders doesn't exactly have a leg to stand on when it comes to putting ones own constituents above the health of the nation as a whole.

Still I suspect this vote was aimed either at Republicans or was a genuine attempt to lower drug prices that missed the fact that Canada has very lax regulation of exported drugs.

This WaPo article on the "MAGA" slogan is mostly just Trump's usual self-indulgent waffle, but...

"Being a great president has to do with a lot of things, but one of them is being a great cheerleader for the country," Trump said. "And we're going to show the people as we build up our military, we're going to display our military.

"That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue. That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades. I mean, we're going to be showing our military," he added.

This is not a drill, people. In two days Trump will have a literal army. And, being as shallow and brutish as he is, he will look for every excuse to show it off. Or use it.

[up] My strong impression was that this was just political maneuvering designed to make the Republicans look bad, and Bernie took the opportunity to put Booker in the crosshairs. I mean, it wouldn't even have meant we would start importing from Canada - it just laid the budgetary framework, so that Enzi could start importing from Canada if he so chose. And it's worth mentioning that he voted against it, so he clearly had no intention of doing so even if he was given the authority.

It was a bill that was going nowhere no matter what, with a lot of potential concerns associated with it. Not that that's stopping people from decrying Booker as a traitorous sellout.

I'm probably not qualified to give an in-depth answer to that question. All I can say is that the concerns posed in the article - namely, that thanks to the peculiarities in Canada's drug regulations, pharmaceuticals exported to the US would be subject to no government safety oversight whatsoever - sound entirely valid to my ears.

This article by contrast, suggest that that there is little evidence that drugs from Canada are more dangerous then their American counterparts, however it wouldn't necessarily do much to correct the problem of drug prices in the US.

Given everything I've seen I really don't see much reason to assign any sinister or insincere motives to either Booker or Sander's side.

RBluefish Since: Nov, 2013

Well, as I understand it, the point is that government safety regulations are probably why Canadian drugs are no more dangerous there than they are in the US. And since exported drugs aren't subject to those regulations, companies (most likely small companies) could theoretically take advantage of that loophole and sidestep said regulations.

[up][up][up][up]Well it's not just Canada, it also applies to any to the quality of any industrialized nation.

Either way, it kind of misses the point since the reason drugs are cheaper in these countries has little to do with lower levels of regulation, but with the government's ability to regulate prices.

[up]Not surprising. As someone who is forced to watch Fox on an almost daily basis you see a lot of disingenuous right-wing assertions that are not only taken at face value, but are treated as near fact.

They really do seem to exist in an alternate reality.

[up][up][up] Yes, but it's also consistent with a belief that a return to a multipolar world is inevitable viewed from a purely realist* foreign policy perspective; if the US is simply first among the great powers in 2030, the incentives to participate in free and open trade instead of grabbing and holding spheres of influence are drastically decreased, because of the requirement of some degree of mutual trust to maintain such trade links.

So the FBI has become politicized, and we can no longer trust them to maintain professional impartiality in an investigation if their political beliefs are involved.

Putin's "game" is already won- I don't know why people are talking about "long term." Our ability to protect ourselves from foreign interference, specifically Russian espionage operations, appears to have been critically weakened, which makes us look weak and unreliable. Meanwhile, Putin and Russia look powerful, smart and successful. The whole world can see which way the wind is blowing.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

[up] Russia has serious manpower and economic issues that pretty much doom it to being the junior partner in a geopolitical relationship with either the United States or China. My suspicion is that he intends to play the United States and China against one another and use the distraction to bolster Russia's position on the global stage.
