Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Can't disagree with the Swedish Chef.
Also, this may be a stupid question, but why can't Manning be released now rather than April? Or to put in another way, when the individual is someone who is suicidal and has been subject to bad conditions, if you are going to release them, it would be better to do so sooner rather than later. Or at least transfer them to better conditions in the interim.

"We'll turn on Trump if he doesn't do what we want." Well that's great. You going to apologize to all of the people who's lives the Republicans are going to ruin as well, or is it all just about you? Voting for someone just because they say they're going to bring jobs is ignorant, especially when they've barely outlined a plan for that.

Hey, Trump's gonna give everyone health insurance now. How? Because he's Trump!
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Manning is still guilty of giving state documents to Wikileaks, though. It's horrible the way they treated her, yeah, but she's still pretty much a traitor for working with Wikileaks aka Putin's stooges. How's that a reason to celebrate?
There's a moment we make a decision Not to cower and crash to the ground The moment we face our worst demons Our courage foundYeah Manning did what she did not to reveal anything but so as to hurt the US military in retaliation for its poor treatment of her.
She knowingly worked with Wikileaks, an organisation whose leader would later that year be arrested on rape charges, while I feel sympathy for her (she is a damaged person who lashed out and has been punished horribly for that (including likely being tortured)) it's hard to see her as any kind of hero or good person, she's more a cautionary tale about what happens when you ignore the psychological needs of your troops.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhile admitting I don't know enough about the case to fully comment, my impression was that Manning uncovered/leaked some actual wrongdoing (i.e. atrocities) by U.S. troops and that Wikileaks wasn't the Russian mouthpiece then that it has become. Or to put that last part another way, you can't really attribute Assange's personal flaws and motivations to Manning.
Wikileaks didn't have the reputation it has now but Assange was arrested on rape charges that same year.
Manning leaked stuff that looks very bad if I recall (including footage of a friendly fire incident where the helicopter firing thought it was targeting insurgents and was thus jubilant about every hit) but also random stuff that revealed nothing but the identities of people who the Taliban and AQ wanted to kill.
X2 Obama is doing his final pardons on his way out the door.
I failed my final year of uni, so technically I guess I'm not.

I'm graduating in May. Hopefully the economy can hold together long enough for me to find a job.
edit: @Rust belt voters will turn on Trump article: The guy giving the "We will turn on him so fast" quote actually comes from my area. I really hope they do. Seeing the people in my hometown vote for Trump infuriates me.

If the Rust Belt turns, that would be almost poetic. The entire country united against Trump, except all the leaders, who are united for him.
