Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Literally or metaphorically?
LePage: John Lewis should thank Republican presidents for ending slavery
Jesus Christ, Republicans.
New Survey coming this weekend!I just used the ACLU website to look up contact information for my representative. I sent her the following. I'm trying to decide if I want to post it on Facebook too.
I swear to God, anybody who's still bleating the "Republicans ended slavery" line needs a smack upside the head. Anybody who tells John frickin' Lewis that he ought to be grateful to white Republicans needs a smack upside the head with a tire iron.
A woman is suing the Orange One for sexual misconduct.
A press conference has been scheduled for today.
"For some reason, the left has become so hateful"
This is fountain for satirist and caricaturists.
I mean, those liberals are discriminating our choices and life style, my brother was expelled for wearing our traditional attire in college - John Smith, as he handles copies of birth of a nation wearing his white hood.
I feel like we're being hostilized for who we are. We can't be proud of our heritage and voicing that pride is getting us shunned from society - James Lind, holding a copy of Mein Kampft on his stand titled The Jewish Question.

Inter arma enim silent leges"Those liberals are such hypocrites. They claim to be all about tolerance, but the moment I put on my Klan robes and start advocating ethnic cleansing, they get all up in my business."
(Seriously, I will not be sorry if I never hear the "you have to be tolerant of intolerance" argument again in my life.)

I only recall the the one voicemail Andrew Breitbart left not too long before he bought the farm
(now, for his namesake site, its (ex-)writers and its fans...). Which one was this?
A list of performers who will be performing at the Trump inauguration, albeit prior to Jennifer Holiday's backing out
. TMZ is claiming that death threats directed at her and her family also contributed to her doing so. Well, I guess nobody gives enough of a shit about The Piano Guys for that...
The "intolerant left", or rather those using them to justify a persecution complex: Well, showing these charming folks the contents of r/ShitTankiesSay would render them utterly insufferable.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotSpeaking of things to be performed at the Trump inauguration, might I suggest an Americanized version of this?
On a more serious note, I'm surprised we haven't seen Kid Rock or Ted Nugent there.
EDIT: Wait, no, better:

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThat is a seriously messed-up situation to be in, where you actually have reason to fear reprisals for expressing your political viewpoints and asking you representative to represent you.
I'm at least safe from that myself. I hate my Congressman, but so does just about everybody else in my town. (We're pretty much a solid blue city in a sea of red.)
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Give a fake name, the address for a gas station, and then be honest and sincere when you say you're against Trump but afraid your own Rep will get you blacklisted from employment. If your Rep isn't a piece of shitnote they'll take it to heart.
Otherwise, you'll just have to run for Congress and kick him out in 2018.
So, guys remember the children's Health Insurance Program that Hillary was instrumental in creating in the 90s?
....
Yeah.

Huh, I know Moral Event Horizon isn't supposed to be applied to real life...but damn. If a fictional villain pulled that shit, that would definitely be a Moral Event Horizon.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, if you're going to go evil, you might as well go full evil.
Also, this might be more relevant to the Racism thread than this one, but besides differences in the Republican Party between eras, I'd question the extent to which John Lewis (or anyone) should be "thankful". That view comes with the assumption that the abolition of slavery/civil rights was something given to African Americans by benevolent white people, not something they worked for themselves. And as corollary, the ending of slavery/passage of the 13 and 14 amendments obviously didn't resolve discrimination issues, because if it did, John Lewis and others wouldn't have had to fight for civil rights.
