The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] One of the things that just baffles me in the political system of the United States: I probably wouldn't vote either in my country if in every election my vote was thrown away because of the "all delegates go to the majority" system.

I don't think it's even the Electoral College system that's wrong, but rather the "minority vote goes entirely to waste" in deep blue/red states.

Which is basically the entire purpose of the Electoral College. It's a racist system designed to give more power to slave-owning states.

Well, what do you know, with less than a week 'till inauguration a federal abortion ban is already on the table. By Representative Steve King, no less, who has listed abortion as one of his 'grievances' against black Americans.

I'm trying to be furious, but I think I've just entered "bitter and tired" mode for the next four or so years. This is going to hurt so many people...

"My candidate didn't win" =/= "My vote didn't matter." Even if what you vote for loses, that doesn't make the minority vote useless. The narrower the margin, especially if it's a nationwide issue, emboldens people on the same side as you who did win in their district.

Because for peaceful protests to work, you need the ruling government to actually have a conscience?

Rep. Tom Price last year purchased shares in a medical device manufacturer days before introducing legislation that would have directly benefited the company, raising new ethics concerns for President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Health and Human Services secretary.

Price bought between $1,001 to $15,000 worth of shares last March in Zimmer Biomet, according to House records reviewed by CNN.

I said news, you know. tongue (But yeah, every day I wake up to that doesn't include breaking news that Trump and the GOP have been thrown behind bars always fills me with more grief and rage than ever.)

PS: I swear, if Trump's presidency ends up screwing me over in some way, I will forever hate all of the anti-Trump/GOP people — whether civilians or soldiers — who didn't have the guts to choose do the right thing and take down these madmen through any means necessary, fair or foul.

Andrew Puzder, Trump's pick for Secretary of Labor and wage-thief, is having second thoughts about the job.

What a surprise! The modern CEO doesn't want to work! If there's a silver lining to this mess, it's that most of these clowns want to rule, not govern. Governing requires more effort than they've ever given to anything. They can't even offer bread and circuses, because those cost money.

The old-timey British parliament was shocked at how badly colonials treated their slaves, and wanted to cut back on killing the natives (also, there wasn't much money in it for them). I'd take those old farts in a heartbeat.

The biggest problem with Trump is that he acts as if the US is one of his businesses...and that is not only worrying because he has managed to bankrupt more than one of them. Or because he is acting like an old-style businessman who still thinks that the way to success is to step on everyone on his way up and always just think about his own gain - he is basically a Ferengi. No, the problem here is that this is about more than trade. In his mind the EU is a danger for the US because it has become a powerful market - he never considers that there can be two winners in business, so he wants the EU gone, overlooking that the EU falling apart and the US undermining the NATO might lead to a war in Europe...which is NOT in the US interest, The US economy is way too interwoven with the European one, it can't afford to loose those markets. The only winner in such a scenario is Putin - note that I say Putin, not Russia itself.

Militarized police are back to firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the water protectors at Standing Rock.

On Martin Luther King Day.

Meanwhile, lawmakers try to legalize running them over.

@Swanpride: You are on to something there. Trump basically ran on the promise to renegotiate all our international relationships in a way that is more advantageous to the US. He sees nations as analogous to businesses, and he intends to lead America Inc. toward greater profits.

As part of this overall plan, look for him to start eliminating and consolidating government departments...

To no one's surprise, Trump is decrying the polls that show him with low approval ratings as fake. On Twitter.
