Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump nearly gave away classified information today on a tabloid.

Goodness gracious.
New Survey coming this weekend!
So it's now gotten to the point where Trump talking baseless bullshit out of his ass is now the better scenario. As opposed to nearly leaking classified information. SMH

Disgusted, but not surprisedI can't even imagine how utterly angry Hillary must feel overtime she wakes up. I'd feel betrayed by the very people I had served for thirty fucking years, and all the smears, right-wing and Russian propaganda, dealing with Sanders and his ilk, witchunts, a semi-rogue FBI...
Fuck, man. As someone who loves the woman to death, I feel angry myself at we let her (and by proxy the whole world) down.
New Survey coming this weekend!
Note that her approval ratings were high whenever she was actually in office and more or less out of the public eye. Everyone's fine with her as long as she quietly works for them. But the moment she campaigns, people find reasons to hate and complain. Then again, that's what usually happens to women who actively seek promotions.
I have no doubt that if she had actually won the election, she'd have left the WH with the highest approval ratings ever.
And yeah, she's been through a ton of crap during her life. There's a reason her default expression seems to be set to "Are you fucking kidding me?"

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump is promising "healthcare for everybody" in ACA replacement plan.
I swear to God if the GOP is surdenly on board with single payer when a Republican is proposing it...Well, in the meantime, I'll believe it when I see it Mister President-Elect.

Either
a) He has no actual plan aside from what's scrawled on a napkin or a tweet.
or
b) The plan he comes up with is an awful and impractical one that would make the ACA seem even better by comparison.
or
c) The plan is actually a scheme to line his pockets and the pockets of cronies in the healthcare industry while barely providing any real aid to American citizens.
or
d) some combination of the above.
But if he really is trying to implement a single-payer plan...who wants to bet that the GOP Congresspeople will suddenly decide it's time to impeach him?

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump is really doing a spiffing job to alienate Germany. And I am not even sure if it is intentional or not. But so far he has voiced his discontent that the EU exist, accuses Germany of using it to its own gain, accusing Germany of not pulling their weight in the NATO, and threatened to put tariffs on German products...which, lol, that will be a rude awakening once he realizes how many parts which are put in US cars are actually German.
Trump's going after Germany because they are, ironically, currently one of the last remaining bastions of liberal democracy in the West. Putin's coming for Merkel now, and Trump's going to be backing him up. If those bastards succeed in unseating Merkel and installing another right-wing fascist stooge, then I imagine Germany will be welcomed into the new Axis.
Seriously, you guys need to hang in there. If Merkel goes we're in big trouble.

You have financial and personal ties with Russian mobsters, child traffickers and money launderers.
This isn't the 80's any longer. Information doesn't just vanish, it is all out there. You are going to regret the next 4 years.
We could care less about Democrats attacking you, the fact of the matter is, that you are implicated in some really heavy shit.

Anonymous is full of hot air until proven otherwise, as far as I'm concerned. I remember back when the Orange One was still campaigning they talked a lot of shit about how they were declaring "total war" on him or some such pretentious nonsense. They couldn't even stop him from being elected, are we expected to believe they're going to stop him now that he's the second most powerful man in the world?
If they can do it, fantastic. But until I see some results, all I hear is posturing and attention-seeking.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Honestly, the best argument for the EU, problems with excessive austerity and the divide between Northern and Southern Europe aside, is that it did the job for which it was designed - it created economic interdependence in Europe.
And that interdependence led to an actual, lasting peace in a continent that couldn't get enough of war. It's a remarkable achievement in that regard. The problem is much the same as the problem with increased globalisation. It created few winners and a lot of losers, and without the political will to mitigate this, it all got blamed on The Other. Fast forward a decade or two of liberals with their heads in the sand, and voilá.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

At this point we can only hope that Trump himself doesn't get involved too much in the actual negotiations and sticks with tweeting about whatever annoys him everyday.
Disgusted, but not surprised
