Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Trump tries to make New York City America's capital just so he can stay in Trump Tower instead of the WH."
Reversing the Dinner Table Compromise? If Trump can do that, he can do anything.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Has Trump made serious attempts to continue living in Trump Tower? Keep in mind that this isn't the only time someone moved into the White House from a better house.
Leviticus 19:34would it be a fair assessment to say that You can tell more about an American by their politics than just about any other category?
Because honestly, I think religion being one of the "taboos" of talking stuff with with strangers has long since sailed. I'll talk about Jesus at work or school (even tho I'm an atheist) before I will go even 200 miles of politics unless I'm absolutely sure said person is not a complete buffoon and won't just spew talking points
New Survey coming this weekend!Yeah, religion is easy to talk about unless there are really touchy fanatics (theists or atheists) in the room. When it comes to politics, even people who are otherwise moderate and mild manned can get into what can become shouting matches.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Yeah, I'm about as mild-mannered as they come usually, and I think even I would probably end up yelling myself hoarse if I wound up getting into it with a Trump supporter.
Also, the number of Democratic reps who will refuse to attend the inauguration is now at two dozen and counting.
And it again bears pointing out that they're mostly nonwhite.
I will say this much: if I meet someone who still supports Trump a year or two from now — and Trump's administration turns out to be as bad as we fear it will likely be — I will have some choice four letter words ready.
If they are also whining about losing health insurance thanks to the ACA repeal...yeah, I'm gonna be needing a throat lozenge or two afterwards.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAs a Brit can I note confusion at the John Lewis thing? Why is Trump fighting with an upmarket department store and why does everyone care?

I mentioned it, here and in the racism thread. Yeah, fuck Trump. Seriously. Fuck him. John Lewis is an American hero. Trump is worthless scum at best.
Probably the most cathartic tweet I've seen on the matter is this one
from Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, straight-up saying that Trump isn't fit to polish Lewis's boots.
Good news is that this whole thing seems to be becoming something of a rallying cry for like-minded Democrats. And that sales of March, the graphic novel about Lewis, are up 76,000% on Amazon. Sales of Lewis's biography? Up 800,000%.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Hell, the only one I can think of was like one single Republican senator who praised what Lewis had accomplished by talking (in response to Trump saying he was "all talk, talk, talk and no action"). And this same white senator had just told Lewis that he should attend the inauguration anyway, despite his moral objections, because it "isn't about a man."
Dude, word to the wise - stop trying to whitesplain to John goddamned Lewis how he should peacefully protest systematic injustice, eh? (Also, stop trying to steal people's healthcare while you're at it, you prick.)
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."At best, they don't care enough about Lewis or the image that Trump presents by belittling Lewis to say anything about it.
Also yeah politics has gotten awful and it's not just in the US. This goes without saying, I think that's in large part because some people want things to keep changing and bringing the status quo to unfamiliar territory (their idea of a more just, fair society for everyone), while a lot of other people are resentful of the change that's already happened and want to go BACK to a time where things were supposedly better for them or society.
When this supposed golden era was also a period where you or people you care about had less rights and were treated even worse than they are now, you're going to have a lot of understandable resentment against anyone who wants to "turn back the clock" so to speak. As parts of society change more and more ideologically, others don't and the ideological gap becomes bigger and bigger.
Speaking for myself that's why I have no real resentment against actual principled conservatives, but I loathe reactionaries. Both my brother and sister are LGBT+ so I have no respect for people like Pence who don't think they deserve to exist.

the way you world it, it sound more like "look, I know the dude is a prick but can you atempt anyway? pleaaaaaaaaase?"
Is also the fact that the new times were less devoid of conflict than the old times: war in the middle east, cultural wars about religion,LGTB,assenge, etc a lot of thing change it but a lot stay the same, so for some they want the simple and "right" times back.

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"When this supposed golden era was also a period where you or people you care about had less rights and were treated even worse than they are now, you're going to have a lot of understandable resentment against anyone who wants to "turn back the clock" so to speak. As parts of society change more and more ideologically, others don't and the ideological gap becomes bigger and bigger.
I seem to recall an old Daily Show bit where Jon dug a little deeper into exactly what various Fox pundits and Republican leaders meant when they were talking about the "good old days," and found that not only did each of them have a different idea of when the "good old days" were, but that they tended to correspond to the time period of that individual's childhood.
So in other words, a time when shit still sucked, they just didn't know it because they were a dumb kid who didn't know any better.
The "its not about a man" nonsense irks me especially. Besides the fact that inauguration is essentially a new era party staring and celebrating the new president, you can get politics from just about anything.
Last November people grew beards to raise cancer awareness. Everything makes a statement, and I can more than forgive anyone who's statement is "I do not want to support this nor do I want my face in the newsreel when future students are watching "The Alt-Right - A Warning from History.""

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our liveshttps://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/5o4dpg/mike_pence_denies_contacts_with_russia_during/
Chris Wallace had to press Pence 3 different times for him to lie and say that the campaign had no contact with Russia.
Pence is going out with Trump.
Ryan, you're in.

edit: There's also the CIA, NSA, etc. No matter what Trump or the American people want they'll probably work day and night to undermine him. You think they'll put in all this effort and then go "Well the American people don't care. Guess we'll just let Trump remain in office."
