Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There has never been a situation where the entirety of any country's population went against their country's leader. So the fact that comments on a website with a decided conservative bent don't really match up with the likes of the liberal posters on this, an entirely different website, should not really be taken as discouraging. (And really I don't think the comment sections on many websites should be taken as a sign that you will be defeated. Every site attracts a certain crowd so it's not like you're going to get a friendly debate on most of them. All comment sections should be read with a saltshaker nearby.)
The number of Democratic congresspeople refusing to attend the inauguration has grown to at least 20 as of today,
with several declaring they will boycott the ceremony out of solidarity with John Lewis.
I notice that most of them aren't white, which probably isn't a coincidence.

Christopher Steele, British Agent who originally leaked the Pee-Gate Scandal, has gone into hiding with the rest of his Family
. I pray for them, and hope they don't wind up in a ditch somewhere.
Do note that as breaking the Preservation Order is a felony, it, in itself, would be considered an impeachable offense for Trump and his Cabinet. Trump and his Cabinet would have to not get caught breaking it or otherwise he could be impeached and possibly convicted for a felony just for breaking the Preservation Order.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySincere question, though - who would enforce it? Pretty soon, Trump and the GOP will have control of the Senate, the House, the DOJ, and probably the Supreme Court. Christ, probably even our intelligence agencies. Who's going to hold him accountable?

The new rules significantly relax longstanding limits on what the N.S.A. may do with the information gathered by its most powerful surveillance operations, which are largely unregulated by American wiretapping laws. These include collecting satellite transmissions, phone calls and emails that cross network switches abroad, and messages between people abroad that cross domestic network switches.
Guess somebody is pissed off...

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleThe 1st foreign dignitary Trump will meet? Putin
The U.K. newspaper said Trump and his team told British officials that their first foreign trip would be a summit in Iceland with Putin within weeks of his inauguration.
The plan is likely a nod to Ronald Reagan’s Cold War visit in Reykjavik with Mikhail Gorbachev, the newspaper noted.
Incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer called the report "100 percent false" on Twitter.
The Times has reported that Trump wants to discuss nuclear disarmament with Putin, citing sources who said Trump wants to meet Putin outside of Russia and that Reykjavik was a strong contender.
The meeting had not been announced by Trump team officials or Russian officials, and reports say Iceland has not been formally contacted about such an event.
Trump’s relationship with Putin has been the subject of controversy following U.S. intelligence reports that Russia interfered in the election to help the businessman.
Trump has asserted he won without the help of Russia, but has recently acknowledged he thinks they were behind hacks that targeted the Democratic National Committee.
What was that saying "Perception is Reality" LOLOLOLOL *cries*
I'm kind of wondering if when Trump gets around to the Canada visit, if he's going to try and wrangle a stay in the Trump building in Toronto...and discover that he screwed up and his building in Canada isn't actually in the capital, or even anywhere near Ottawa.
Especially considering all the legal problems surrounding the building. A bunch of the investors want the people who actually own the building to drop the Trump name, because it's not doing any good for the business flow.
Especially since Trump is not the name for luxury in Toronto. The Fairmont Royal York is, because that's where the Royal Family stay when they visit Toronto.

According to the National Enquirer, which is my Bible, Trump and Putin are meeting to make a plan to eliminate China and North Korea. Must be true!
Also, on the subject of SNL, is Alec Baldwin an official cast member by now? If not, he might as well be; we've been getting a Trump skit pretty much every episode this season. Not that I mind.
"...Eliminate China?"
Christ, I hope that isn't true. But National Enquirer aside, it does seem inevitable at this point that we're being deliberately steered towards conflict with China. The only question that remains is what kind of conflict that will be, and whether it will be merely damaging or downright catastrophic.

- "Not too many people dislike Trump more than I, but this is as ridiculous as Obama and his peace prize. That being said, I think this is a good thing. as long as the left keeps Trump as its enemy, we have the best chance of putting through conservative policies, as he will always lash out at them. If they ever discover that they can manipulate him through praise, then those chances become reduced."
- "That's exactly right. Let's test their ability to multitask. Can they simultaneously act like complete reactionary morons and oppose sound conservative policies in a rational way? The more they beclown themselves, the more likely it is that he responds by doing things that we'll like."
- "Apart from the bit about "changing US law to allow torture of terrorism suspects" it seems that their complaints about his "misogynistic, xenophobic, and racist rhetoric" are all focused on typical leftist gibberish. It's xenophobic to want to enforce existing immigration laws. It's misogynistic to oppose abortion. It's racist to ... what is that stupid claim about again? His promise to help revitalize minority communities in the inner cities? And seriously... a desire to repeal the ACA can be considered a factor warranting human rights scrutiny? That's stupid-on-steroids right there..."
Are we sure there's a "we" to stand together? We might just be that poster child for divide et impera that historians will sing about for centuries, this cycle a political cannae. I know things like the indivisible guide give out plans for the times, but then I read the above and feel a distinct lack of allies or a common language. One does not expect one's countrymen to respond with schadenfreude when they show clear fear of the future that's backed up by international humanitarian organizations.edited 14th Jan '17 8:47:53 PM by CenturyEye
