Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any time I bring up the scary things Trump is doing my mom either approves or says "well if things are going to be so awful, how come you haven't killed yourself by now?" (That last bit also encompasses my views on climate change). I live in Europe so there's nothing I can do. Am I supposed to keep going until all of a sudden everything ends?

Stuff's not going to "suddenly end", although if your mom is telling you to kill yourself, you have a valid case for child abuse with the authorities. That said, your question is seriously off-topic for this thread, and we most especially will not engage in personal counseling.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's okay. More likely is that stuff will get gradually worse for all but the super-rich and/or politically connected, until the current wave of reactionary politics sufficiently discredits itself and is swept out by progressive reforms, or a major crisis happens, followed by a revolutionary wave. It's the pattern of history.
If anything, the dangerous idea is that we are somehow exceptional, that humanity of the 21st century has "grown out" of the cycle of politics. That leads to complacency, which gets us Trumpistan.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
What else are they supposed to do? Defecate all over Trump's shiny new lawn?

People are beginning to realise the inevitable: that only Trump can bring himself down. I still find it hard to believe that posters here have hope that Trump's own party will impeach him over relatively minor things.
Life is unfair...@Zero: Well, you should probably point out that that's an incredibly inappropriate question and ask her why she thought it was ok to ask that of her child, regardless of age. In any case, unless you've become a citizen of whatever part of Europe you're in, you can still vote in whatever state you're a citizen of I think. You could look into that and see what exactly your voting rights are in your situation. Even if you are in a different country right now, your vote still counts.
Also I guess you could contribute to politics wherever you are by getting involved in local causes? I mean, that doesn't really help America, but you need to look for what you can do where you are. Europe is having problems, too, obviously.
Blkwhtrabbit: You say that but if it was true people would stop doing those. The problem, obviously, is that protests need to get onto TV and other media. Which I think might be less of a problem going forward. Protests still have power.

They've already gone down, and approval ratings aren't enough reason to want to dump him. While I do kind of think impeachment is highly likely, I don't expect it to happen this year, and probably not the next.
The thing is, though, if none of his crimes are meeting with resistance from the Republicans now, what exactly could he do that could be framed as unacceptable later on? Because so far most of them seem okay with all the Russia crap, accepting Mc Cain and Graham. Mc Cain can't hold that line on his own, and Graham seems to be bending.

More info on the spy where the Russia story comes from.
I really, really wish this had been made available to the public before we voted. I mean, it would've never changed the minds of his base, but the fence/protest voters might've been swayed.
