Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Since I've been following closely the movements that led to the alt-right for years, no (((fake news))) has always been a thing among those groups, or at least denying everything as true unless it isn't from trustworthy sources, like Drudge Report, Alex Jones or Zero Hedge.
However during this election cycle it went out from the fringes to the mainstream.

Inter arma enim silent legesThat would be why it was a new phenomenon for me, then.
Sounds like House members are about to get a classified briefing on Russian election interference.

I was responding to the post above yours. Indeed, it would certainly be grounds for impeachment, if even a tenth of what we suspect is true.

Maybe a 1080p video of Trump drowning puppies in vomit? That would then be sent to all of their constituents? Although even then, he'd probably have to mutter "also I'm gonna really fuck over the WWC" before his base turned on him.

A straight, white, Protestant male gun-toting trillionaire would have to claim to be the next Messiah and promise them all million-dollar checks to vote the way he says.
But more likely, it's impossible.

Because, you know, giving money to your oppressors is something people apparently enjoy doing. What kind of black gay Muslim votes GOP? Especially this election cycle? Masochism isn't healthy outside of controlled environments!
The fuck? Trump's approval is like, 30%. How is that not enough for them?

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you

What's both terrifying and utterly hilarious is the way he keeps going "RUSSIA SAYS IT ISN'T TRUE!" like that should be the final word on the matter. They are literally the last people in the world who would ever say it was true.note
But yeah, convincing his followers they can't trust anybody but him it a textbook authoritarian move. Suppress the truth and make them think you're the only one they can trust. Therefore, anyone who says bad things about you is automatically lying.
Another scary part is how readily his followers are snapping it up and trying to truly drag us all into a post-fact society. And how fast the term "fake news" went from a documented and widespread phenomenon to a means for the alt-Reich to discredit literally any news they didn't like. Was it just me, or did it feel like it happened overnight?
