Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, I dislike the notion of putting a businessmen into the position of Secretary of State in the first place, but of the people in Trump's cabinet without any government experience, Tillerson is probably the least disagreeable.
I'll believe the GOP is going to turn on Trump when I see it. Tillerson comes with some extremely high profile recommendations, among them former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and Colin Powell, so it's hard to see him not being confirmed.

Censorship of the media. You don't need to change the Constitution to do it, you just need to find ways to effectively accomplish it.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Christ. Apparently he also had paid staffers interspersed throughout the press, there only to clap and make it seem like he was popular.
Creating the illusion of public support where there is none.
Threatening to have his brownshirts bounce anyone who presses him for answers.
Decrying CNN - the second largest news network in the country - as "fake news!"
So. How long until the Trump administration arrests/detains its first journalist?
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Creating the illusion of public support where there is none.
Standard operating procedures in Argentina during the Kirchner administration, and probably the Menem and Perón ones too.
Edit: Also, this comic strip
. Prophetic, isn't it?

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV"This guy doesn't shake hands but he bangs Russian people," Benza said, making a reference to Trump's well-documented germophobia. "He used to call me when I was a columnist and say ‘I was just in Russia, the girls have no morals, you gotta get out there.’"

This was back in 2001
That was the tail end of The '90s. Putin's Russia is different.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Oh, so that's why there was applause during that press conference. I though the Press was actually clapping for Trump a couple of times...
... This man seriously has issues. Who pays for people to clap for them?
Narcissists who know full-well (but cannot accept) that people hate their guts.
To quote Woody Allen:
"No, I don't think you're paranoid. I think you're the opposite of paranoid. I think you walk around with the insane delusion that people like you."
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.A Fox News anchor, of all people, just stood up for Jim Acosta, CNN, and freedom of the press against Benedict Donald.
He ain't going to be at Fox News much longer if he keeps up that attitude.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."I guess Trump is so nakedly and abashedly terrible some people at Fox news have decided to draw a line in the sand, as the saying goes.
I do think he might be following Kelly if he keeps this up, and that would actually be bad because it means Fox has one less person with at least some scruples. Whatever the political bent of the network there are lines you shouldn't cross, and buttering up Trump/not calling him out on bullshit is one of them.
Some more on why Tillerson will probably be a climate and foreign policy disaster.
Not sure if it's been linked yet.

Unless Tillerson follows through, I don't see this as anything other than a distraction. Something for the press to wave around while Putin gets a free hand.
Also, Rubio was hitting Tillerson pretty hard. I'm hoping there's a lot of Republicans looking for revenge on the short-fingered vulgarian.
