The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

wild mass guessThe issue with the latest allegations is that it's entirely possible they originated as a gag on 4chan (perhaps by the same so called FBI agent who seemed to know an awful lot about what was going to happen in regards to the Clinton investigation) that got passed up to intelligence agencies via gullible if well meaning journalists, and when one allegation turns out to be faked, it's far easier to rationalize dismissing future allegations along those lines.

This exiled Russian politician has a less lurid theory as to the nature of Putin's kompromat: if Trump steps out of line, Putin will simply release proof that not only did Russia help him win the election, but Trump knew and was complicit in it.

Diabolical, in many ways. "Hey, how'd you like me to help you become the most powerful man on Earth? You would? Great! And if you don't do exactly what I say, I'll tell everyone I helped you."

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

[up] The irony is that this would actually make Trump effectively one of the most powerless people on Earth.

Trump has been a Manchurian Candidate for Russia even back when it was called the Soviet Union.

https://mobile.twitter.com/sarahkendzior/status/812658154060337154

The Soviets were thinking about running him in 88 after Reagan but the USSR broke up soon after although Trump kept in touch with many of those Russian oligarchs.

[up][up][up] Well, I'm guessing he would be given enough leash to go about pursuing his own petty agendas. Building the wall, and so forth. Not to mention the ability to strip down our government and sell it off for parts through rampant kleptocracy. That's probably the carrot in this equation - "I can help you become filthy, stinking, up-to-your-eyeballs rich."

And if Trump ever starts to do anything that looks like it might interfere with Putin's agenda, well, out comes the stick.

So is Trump still holding the press conference today? There's no way he can just up and cancel without it looking suspicious.

Now all that hangs on this is the media doing their damn job and grilling him about his possible with Russia.

Trump has never exactly been averse to looking suspicious. He doesn't need to, with his cultists unconditionally hanging on his every word.

I would bet on the presser not happening. If it does...well, let's see if there are any journalists with a shred of integrity left in this country, shall we?

Trump would simply say that those allegations are a lie...after all, who trusts Putin? He naturally just made it up to damage him.

Never underestimates Trump's ability to wiggle out of a charge. He has done nothing else for past decades.

Once again, we're not talking allegations here. We're talking proof. That's how government-level blackmail presumably works - it's not - "if you don't do what we say, we'll start some nasty rumors about you." It's "if you don't do what we say, we're going to release irrefutable proof of some things and utterly wreck you."

Donalds twitter is gold! He's so obviously guilty it's hilarious. Moron straight up sucks at damage control.

Russia just said the unverified report paid for by political opponents is " A COMPLETE AND TOTAL FABRICATION, UTTER NONSENSE." Very Unfair!"

Well that settles it guys

Despite the specific subject never coming up to my knowledge, Trump is whinging "I have never received loans from Russia!" on twitter.

Unsurprisingly, Trump is having a meltdown on Twitter:

"Russia just said the unverified report paid for by political opponents is "A COMPLETE AND TOTAL FABRICATION, UTTER NONSENSE." Very unfair!"

"Russia has never tried to use leverage over me. I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA - NO DEALS, NO LOANS, NO NOTHING!"

"I win an election easily, a great "movement" is verified, and crooked opponents try to belittle our victory with FAKE NEWS. A sorry state!"

"Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to "leak" into the public. One last shot at me. Are we living in Nazi Germany?"

Proof which won't hold up when it comes from Putin.

It doesn't need to, though. Hell, I'd be surprised if it did, because that would be way too clear of a link back to Putin. Why would he expose himself to that kind of risk when he could just leak the information through a proxy? Trump cheeses off Putin, and lo and behold, next week a mysterious third party just so happens to release damning information about Trump.

Also, good God, Trump is throwing quite a tantrum.

If all of this comes to a head and leads to his impeachment, I totally expect him to lose it so hard that whenever people really start fighting his policies directly, he calls for blood and tells his more extreme supporters to start shooting his vocal opponents. Because if he's already losing his shit just over some reports, he isn't going to lie down and take it when his "enemies" start tearing down what he's trying to accomplish.

Hell, he'll probably put out hits. We might lose whatever good people are left in government. Or some of them at least.

Unless an honest-to-God miracle from Heaven happens and he never makes it to the White House...I dread to think what kind of revenge he has in store for everyone who's humiliating him now. Because at this point, he is going to be hell-bent on revenge. Revenge on the journalistic press in particular, I imagine.

In completely unrelated news, did everybody catch how Sessions refused to say that he wouldn't prosecute journalists for doing their jobs? Oh, and that the government should be able to incarcerate US citizens indefinitely without trial?

I just felt like bringing that up for some reason.

As much as I disagree with what she did, it's probably a good idea to let her get out now and away from the grasp of the GOP.

Unless it's to Russia.

BBC reporting claims that there is video and audio evidence that the Russians have blackmail material on Trump.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
