Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryBernie Bros: Quite honestly, assuming they weren't /pol/ plants, they are still a smaller faction that the sorts of people who go "but the Overton Window is far to the right of Europe/Scandinavia/the USSR/Cuba/North Korea, why should I bother voting for late stage capitalists? JILL STEIN FOR HEAD DICTATOR OF THE PROLETARIAT!" today, quite possibly because they were /pol/ plants. And quite honestly given the desecration of everything Robert Byrd ever worked for, I doubt it matters anyway.
In case it hasn't been posted, former Mexican President Vicente Fox is not

Yet another Twitter thread (I wonder what Storify's bottom line looks like at this rate: Of Bayrock LLC and Russian funding of Trump projects when no one else would

Just look at that maze of companies

EDIT: Twitter thread on the likelihood of Trump's casino losses being used to hide money laundering
.
I really am left wondering whether the cable news channels really did decide that you needed to be a certified accountant to understand money laundering on any level.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotWhat really irks me is that the mountain of evidence of Trump's corruption and incompetence could rival Kilamanjaro at this point, and this didn't bother the millions of idiots who voted for him.
One reason I voted for HRC (among many) was that I treated the vote as a job interview. I would never hire someone with Trump's track record of incompetence and dishonesty and possible criminality who has little to no understanding of what his job would actually entail. Especially if he kept spouting boorish xenophobic racist comments and tweets during the interview.
HRC might not have been my ideal candidate (though she was damn close), but the decision to pick her over Trump for the job? Not even a remotely difficult one for me.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI agree...I didn't had a vote, but if I could have voted, this would have been no question for me. What shocked me so much about Trump getting that many votes was less the notion that so many people would give into their worse instincts and verge to the right, it was the notion that voters could be so stupid. I mean, I kind of get it with Brexit, the UK government spend ages to blame the EU for everything, it is no wonder that so many people bought into the notion. But Trump? That he was entirely unsuited for the job and corrupt through the core couldn't have been more obvious if there had been constantly a noisy, red-flashing sign over his head with the writing "last man on earth you want in a position of power".
Hillary was one of the most qualified candidates in modern history, and ran an extremely progressive campaign.
Trump is a fascist, a bigot, a fool, and an existential threat to the human race.
It's that simple. I almost feel like at this point, if someone can't see that, there's no point in trying to persuade them otherwise.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVThe last sentence (where he yet again calls the media "very dishonest!") should frighten everyone. Because this is how autocrats operate. They discredit the media, insist that they're the only reliable source, make their worshipers think they're the only ones they can believe. That way, when journalists cover the horrible things they say and do, nobody believes them.
Benedict Donald has outright said that people should only believe something if it came from his orange lips. And it's worked. His horde of Trumplings are lightning-quick to cry "fake news!" at literally any news story they don't like. While the media seem to just sit there and take it, rolling over like scared dogs.
Also, obligatory mention of how the soon-to-be second most powerful man in on Earth is acting like a bratty toddler in front of the entire geopolitical world. And how he's told a bald-faced yet again.note
My mayor just called him a childish liar on Twitter. Have I mentioned that I love my mayor? Hate my congressman, have mixed feelings about my senators (but still mostly positive), adore my mayor.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."I was more than frightened enough when he told Secretary Clinton, she'd be in jail if he was in charge back during the debates. Somehow that line wasn't all over the news.
Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVI saw in the news today that Congress is trying to rush Trump's Cabinet picks into office before their ethics reviews can be completed.
Honestly, not only does that not surprise me, but here's my prediction: It will be allowed, Congress will get all or most of them in before ethics reviews are done, and even when the reviews reveal ethical breaches or conflicts of interest after the fact, nothing will happen.
It's been fun.On that subject, once again people are being asked to call their Senators on the matter ASAP. A script is available here.

I swear, these far-right lunatics just cannot be reasoned with. At times like this, I really wish I had a certain magic notebook to use against them, even knowing full well that I'd quickly plummet into a full-on, Yagami-esque god complex and probably manage to make the world even worse somehow, just because absolute power corrupts absolutely.
