Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In all honesty, how much more productive could any further introspection be?
Any suggestions on how to improve voter turnout and mitigate voter suppression winds up being drowned out by incessant ideological purity tests and circular arguments on whether or not identity politics or neoliberalismHEY actually had a negative effect on the Democrats' prospects.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
Introspection in terms of how the party is run and how positions are distributed is something I think needs to be heavily scrutinized. The fact that the democrats have such a desolate selection of rising prospects who could potentially run for president is something I think everyone can agree is a problem, and there are most certainly structural issues with the party that make that an issue. While I have and would still argue that Sanders would be the better of the two choices in the primary, both were extremely far from ideal in their own way.

I think that the party needs to take a look at itself and what it can do better across the board, as I've said before while we should aim for a win I want a big one, not a narrow victory that might be overturned after a few years of Republican fuckery.
The problem right now is that (at least here) the focus is purely on how the bit of the party that you don't like screwed up. All the people who hatred Sanders already say it's all his fault, the folks who hated Clinton already insist that it's all her fault and we go round and round in circles.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran
It goes in circles but I would argue there are some very obvious places where we can find common ground, first in regards to the Clinton team's desire to chase red states when she herself was barely more popular than Trump was a fatal strategic blunder, secondly in regards to the party's dismal performance on the state and local level, and thirdly in regards to it's desolate bench for future presidential elections and leadership positions.
Both problems can and should be discussed in terms of how we can resolve them. For the first, it's simple: don't take the rust belt for granted, campaign there like it's competitive because it absolutely can be contested by the GOP, and don't rely on union endorsements to turn out union members, which was one of the critical failure points of the democrat's coalition in the rust belt. Democratic messaging in regards to those areas could also use some work.

BS masquerading as facts is the new normal for America, don't y'know?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'd say I don't think so but the Senate and Congress are filled with sociopaths that will pretty much say I'll allow it.
Damn, I guess all those money being sent to fiscal havens will keep being untouched but those poor people sending money outside so their families don't suffer even more is going to get axed.
These are going to be 4 tough years.

Does anybody know anything about this?

You know, I tried to warn Latin American tropers that the lack of American sponsored coups and general fuckery in Latin America over the past decade or two was largely a consequence of our attentions being devoted to the middle east, and a future President might very well withdraw from the region (Trump seems to be leaving it to Russia) due to the decreased reliance on imported oil over domestic sources, but they were quite skeptical.

Mind posting a summary and/or quote? Not everyone can (or wants to) access Twitter.
Also, 5 dead, 9 wounded in the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting
, with one man, Esteban Santiago, in custody and another possible shooter based on reports to the FAA. The one in custody is 26, is a US Army veteran, and (thus far) doesn't fit the "normal" profile for someone to do something like this - so suffice to say, I'm glad they were able to take him alive, because there's going to be a lot of questions about why he did it.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Top US Senator (Bob Corker, R-TN) says Trump will not destroy Iran Deal, Will 'Radically Enforce it' instead
. He has no evidence, though, that Trump won't break the Deal, and this is just what he and other Senate Republicans think is the best course of action.
