Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And how exactly would that help?

It's very likely that many Republicans had no intention of replacing the ACA, but I don't think that is something that's going to come out in this conversation. It really should but I'm not sure if Democrats are in a position to do that.
Either way it shows that it's much easier to be the opposition then to be in government, particularly for ideologues.
@No replacement Healthcare plan: "They don't have a plan, they just hate mine!" "Convince them otherwise!" "Well, Paul Ryan won't talk to me, that's a nonstarter." "Ah, winning was easy, Barack, governing's harder."
"A second flood, a simple famine, plagues of locusts everywhere, or a cataclysmic earthquake, I'd accept with some despair. But no, You sent us Congress! Good God, Sir, was that fair?"
Y'all have some very old problems to reckon with... This seems like a regression: weren't things saner only two decades ago?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
That seems more like a hypothetical scene than a quote of something.
Also, the briefing on Russian interference in the election is currently ongoing. It's a doozy
. Granted I'm a semi-avid follower of Defense Twitter...
Dunno, I think I've seen that "Good God, you sent us Congress" line before somewhere.
Speaking of inane semi-relevant quotes, has it occurred to anyone yet that Donald Trump will be giving the next State of the Union Address (or the one next year, I'm not exactly clear on how that works in this case)
That line is from 1776.
Trump giving the State of the Union address...I wonder if that will also be at a fourth grade level.

I'm trying not to let that occur to me.
In fact, Call of Cthulhu be damned, I think finally succumbing to gibbering lunacy would be a mercy to me at this point.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotIs that related to the old meme: "Obama endorses oxygen; Republicans all die of asphyxiation."?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Obama is American. America does not like Russia. Therefore Russia does not like Obama. Republicans do not like Obama, therefore Republicans like Russia. Now Congress is Duma.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
To think, the GOP used to give Obama so much crap over the whole "Russian reset" thing.
Edit:
So apparently the GOP's not gonna change the ACA this year or next year.
Conveniently that means any changes are going to happen long after the midterm elections.

I think there's a lot of truth to this but it reminded me of something that's a bit of a pet peeve, partly because it supports the criticisms of leftists and conservatives that Democrats are engaging in a "Red Scare".
Russia is not a communist country anymore; it's a right wing nationalist country. So, it's not surprising that they get along with/try to elect right wing nationalists in other countries.
And for this reason, the argument that "Ronald Reagan would hate the current GOP for their support of Russia" doesn't work, because besides the fact that you aren't talking about the same Russia, Reagan actually was on board with supporting right wing authoritarian governments (i.e. the Contras; Apartheid South Africa)- granted, these weren't enemies of the United States, but still...

Looks like HB2-style "preemption bills" are going to be a general thing.
Because the party of the small government apparently doesn't like it when the small government enacts minimum wage rises, or LGBT protections, or environmental regulations on cities.
"Yup. That tasted purple."

Marsha Blackburn, a GOP Representative, held a twitter poll a couple days ago asking who wanted the ACA to be repealed. Only about 14% wanted it gone. The rest wanted it to stay. Now, it's twitter so it isn't a scientific poll or anything, but then again, it's twitter. It's actually surprising that she apparently managed to avoid most of the insane side of the site.
