Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not an accelerationist — I'd actually classify my opinion more as fatalism. America was never great, is not great, and will never great, and lacks the capacity to ever be great because we as a people, civilization, and nation are so rotten, corrupt, selfish, bigoted, and stupid that for us to be great, we would first have to stop being Americans.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."America is just people. Like everywhere else, with good ones, bad ones, and indifferent ones. The idea that we are somehow great, or exceptional, by definition, is what's so toxic.

Please stop with the self pity and fatalism, as someone who is in country with the worst inflation on the world(yeah) and suffer year under a trump-like president(from the left! not less) I can said you are less bad that you belive.
That be said, America have a strong case of denilism in front of easy answer and need of vindication which let to trump, let see how the country is going to answr when he self destruct(because he will)

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
Im feeling depress everything I think of trump because is pretty much "I have the feeling of deja vu" is like slasher movie were they manage to repeat the plot and you are caught unaware of that until the middle of the movie and feel rip off.
My only prediction is that Trump is going to self destruct by saying rdiculous shit, since it dosent have the "outsider" status anymore, if the Dems kept united they could give him a punch or two.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
Dems...united...hah! And I say this as a registered Democrat.
We practically embody We ARE Struggling Together.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI suppose you in fact could crunch the numbers on how much of Sanders' or Stein's supporters were complete newbies to the political cycle.
I suppose having your local opposition basically be a bunch of underlings in the shadows of some icons (who don't even seem to be all that informed) tends to give you a better shot at seeing the red flags.
Why Trump's vow to prevent North Korea from testing ICBMs won't work

Speaking of Democrat disunity, a relevant comic

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotIs there a Japanese idiom equivalent to "People who live in glass houses..."? Because someone should tell that Kojima with respect to his country.
I know the dems are strugling but one have to understand the republican arent any better in that: they disappear as party and their are instead the donald trump fan club(I fan, I refuse to see those who vote for him as voterbase, they are a fandumb) he will hurt himself with is tweets(is already happing actually) and soon they will be a breaking point.
problem is....well, yeah the country is going to suffer because of it, my biggest fear is the infantilization of politic were people just shurg what Trump said and asume is the best because he is so good, the same happen here and let to this shitstorm in venezuela, what happen in North carolina is a good sign of that.
And by the way, you can expect the rep party to become more deranged and outside of reallity, is going to happen.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"![]()
I don't think he actually wrote for Revengeance.

I don't think Kojima was involved much with Revengeance.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryAlso because being a "true progressive" is an inherently minority, avant-garde political position separate from the mainstream. Being ahead of your time is hard, being completely static is easy. Every Republican, at some point in their career, has gotten some mileage out of being reactionary, but the same can't be said of Democrats.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."WaPo: GOP congressman Rohrabacher plans Russia trip to ‘work with the Duma’
“We’re going to look at certain goals we can set with our Congress and the Duma,” the Russian legislature, Rohrabacher said in an interview. “What could we actually set in the legislature of Russia and in Congress? Could we work together, for example, and cooperate on space activities?”
Rohrabacher went on to list the rise of the Islamic State and President Obama’s latest round of sanctions against Russia as additional agenda items that he expects to come up during the talks in Moscow.
Rohrabacher, a former White House speechwriter for Ronald Reagan who represents Orange County, said Russian leaders are eager to meet with U.S. lawmakers to talk directly about the sanctions and many other lingering political tensions.
“We’ll go within a month of the inaugural,” the lawmaker said of the timing. “It’s going to be an official trip of my subcommittee.”
Rohrabacher, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats, was coy when asked whether his group would meet with Putin.
“I really can’t say that,” he said after a pause and a half-smile. “It’s possible.”
Not even hiding it anymore.
Christ what the fuck.
New Survey coming this weekend!I'd just like to point out that we made a thread for media and how it seems to reflect current US politics. Posts that are nothing but links to media/qoutes from media seem like... way off topic and also in no way contributing to the conversation, so could we please, please refrain from useless posts like that? It got obnoxious a while ago.
I think Aceof Spades is referring to my posts that are quotes from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. And my past quotes from Hamilton.
Sort of a bad habit of mine.
Probably for the best I refrained from quoting Fallout and Deus Ex as well.

Disgusted, but not surprisedBeing a progressive is hard since, by its very nature, it's going into uncharted waters and asking others to do the same.
Conservatives and reactionaries have the luxury of appealing to people comfortable with the status quo or nostalgic for the past.
Figures that one of California's few GOP Congresspeople would be one of the craziest ones.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Wanting the system to burn as punishment for its evil is exactly what got us #BernieOrBust and #NeverHillary and handed the election to Trump.
