Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's official - multiple outlets are now reporting that the House GOP are withdrawing the ethics changes for the time being, and postponing them for a later date.
Important to note that we can't really afford to savor this victory. They saw the outcry and backed off for now, but they'll try again, and more quietly. They'll try to find a way to slip it in under the radar - which is why we need to keep the spotlight on them, and be there to opposes them then too.
Also, Trump will try to take credit for this, even though he didn't do jack shit, and media will let it happen.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."The Doomsday Clock is just some stupid meme that caught on. It's meaningless except for people who like to point at symbolic representations of someone's opinion about how fucked we are and get all excited.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Or if you just got done reading Watch Men. Really, I think some people first learned of it from that comic. (DON'T JUDGE ME!)

Almost every symbolic representation that tries to use a single metric to inspire shock or outrage is garbage. This includes the national debt clock, the Doomsday Clock, and even things like the DEFCON system to those who don't understand what it actually means.
Also, I love that Trump is now going to get credit in the media for getting the GOP to back off gutting ethics rules, when what he really told them to do is to wait for a more opportune time.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@R Bluefish: As long as we, the voting populace, remain vigilante and aware, Congress cannot pull this stunt. Remember, it was us, the vigilante Voting Populace, that killed SOPA and it's offspring like PIPA.
Also, I'm almost positive that the House is going Blue in 2 years, especially if the Republicans keep trying to (or succeeding in) pulling these stupid, power grabbing stunts. We just have to make sure we vote against any and all Republicans in the House.
And how shamelessly the media will take the opportunity to spin everything Trump does in as positive a light as possible.
Edit: My news feed just popped up a headline that Megyn Kelly will be leaving Fox News this year and joining NBC News. Oh, the deliciousness.

House going Blue? Ain't happening. The district boundaries ensure that power isn't shifting soon. The war against the GOP is the long war — without comprehensive, consecutive, and entrenched victories at every level of government, we won't see another Democrat Congress in our lifetimes.
I have honestly seen no Trump normalizing from most of my news.
Of course, my news comes from sites that ring as "heavily biased" on most fact-checkers.
In order from most to least biased, according to BS detectors: Huffpost, Fusion, Mic, CNN, NPR, BBC

Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youHouse going blue can happen if Trump messes up badly enough. I don't know whether "badly enough" means something trivial or something akin to "gutting healthcare leads to The Plague".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThen we've lost, that's it time to go home. Without a Democratic House any Democratic president is a lame-duck for life, they will see Congress destroy the economy and blame them for it.
Luckily you're wrong, you keep acting like voter suppression means that change can't happen, it doesn't. Progress was managed when women and black people couldn't even vote, so no Congress isn't doomed to be Republican for decades, you're being silly and giving the Republicans a win by saying that.

Dunno if its been mentioned here yet, but any of y'all remember what I said that the current situation at FNC couldn't be maintained in terms of its current roster of pundits (particularly Megyn Kelly and Sean Hannity) and that the election would determine who stays and who goes?
At the time I had said a Clinton victory would show Sean the door, while a Trump victory would end Megyn's stint at Fox.
Whelp.

Megyn Kelly? Moving to NBC? Well, stranger things have happened in the world of news broadcasting.
Former CIA director James Woolsey, advisor to Trump on national security, believes that the Russians did indeed commit election-related hacking
. He's got some other suspects, but it appears that he believes that the main thrust was Russian.
Did we talk about the Ford plant not moving to Mexico?
Because apparently it had nothing to do with Trump
.
Just got over my news feed Paul Ryan is staying as Speaker of the House.

Has Trump claimed credit for this one yet? They seem faster on the uptake compared to the production line shift story earlier this year.
At least he didn't explicitly promise to sack Ryan...
Someone I know already gave Trump credit for it. They aren't even waiting for the news to explicitly declare him the savior of the planet.
