Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Regarding Congress:

I do really like my mayor, at least. And my Senators are all right.
But I still hope that this disaster inspires my district to finally roust our Congressman's ass next chance we get. Although I don't have much hope - he's been hanging on to that seat for a long time now.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."
Dianne Feinstein favors more restrictive gun control, and yet she herself carries a gun for self-defense. She condemns the US intelligence community for spying on US Senators, while turning a blind eye to their spying on private citizens. Which makes her an elitist hypocrite.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.I'm okay with Sen. Lisa Murkowski on her own positions (she's an old-guard Chamber of Commerce Republican who specializes in bringing political bacon to Alaska), but she's too willing to vote in lockstep with the Republican Party.
What I'm wondering is what Paul Ryan will do. I imagine he's getting a sense of creeping doom now that "holy shit I have to run this country."

Such a condemnation sounds...reductive.

Oh God! Natural light!I like both of my senators, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken.
As for the House, my state has Keith Ellison, who has been suggested by some in this thread for a 2020 bid on the Democratic ticket. Nuff said. On the other hand, Jason Lewis got elected. Don't like that guy.
I like Ellison, but I also unfortunately have a hard time seeing a Muslim rise to the presidency in the current climate of bigotry and Islamophobia. Which is only going to get exponentially worse in the years to come.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Bill Nelson has been a pretty decent Senator, while Marco Rubio. . .is Marco Rubio. Interestingly Bill Nelson is one of the Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2018. I'll need to watch that.
I should note to others that Keith Ellison is currently running for head of the DNC, so if he gets elected I doubt he will try to make a run at the presidency.
Anyone know if that's a true claim coming out of North Korea? The main way that the US has kept North Korea's nuclear program in check is via cooperating with China to impose sanctions, something that will probably end soon.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI like-ish my Congresscritter (Brad Ashford), but he got voted out for a Trumpublican wackjob who thinks a balanced budget amendment is a good idea (Don Bacon), our Senators (Ben Sasse and Deb Fisher) are a fucking disgrace, our other two Congresscritters (Adrian Smith and Jeff Fortenberry) are Tea Party or worse, and our Governor is dollar-store Lex Luthor (real name Pete Rickets), whose greatest claims tk fame include a failed senate bid wherein he essentially bought the primary outspend his rivals 10:1 and spent over $11M of his own money on the actual race, being staunchly opposed to gay rights, trying to illegally buy lethal injection drugs from India and pushing for a (successful) referendum to reinstate the death penalty after the state senate banned it and overrode his veto (they also overrode his veto on allowing illegal immigrants protected by DACA to acquire driver's licenses (and then again for commercial and professional licenses the next year) and on raising the gas tax). Oh, and he vetoed LB580, which would have created a non-partisan commission to draw our legislative districts after censuses.
The moral of this story is fuck Pete Rickets
The Arizona Senators are a mixed bag. They're both Republican, but while one is John Mc Cain, AKA one of the few sane Republicans left, the other is Jeff Flake.

Not me; my Congressman is a scumbag, and I hate him too.
