The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Of the great powers of the modern world, Russia is for a variety of reasons the least invested in global stability. Add to that the fact that climate change will free up largely untouched arctic resources that Russia has a major advantage in exploiting due to its geographic position, and it's quite likely Russia will allow things to get pretty far before they invest in stopping climate change in earnest.

[up] He's not wrong there; Russia is one of the few countries that stands to gain strategically from climate change, and the fact that this would come at a cost of a massive blow to global stability doesn't matter to Russia since the geopolitical status quo is already very unfavorable for them.

[up]The hope would be that with a warmer overall climate that more Russian land will become reliably arable to counteract that, and I'm sure they feel that they will not face the brunt of the Climate Change migrant waves.

Whether that is true or not is something I'd rather not find out.

[up][up]Well, yeah, but wouldn't a warmer climate make Russia more suitable for growing crops?

Soil fertility doesnt work like that. Productive farmland is that way because generations of plants died and added their organic matter to the soil. Thawed permafrost will have almost no nutrients in it.

Or they and the rest of the planet will be in for a wonderful surprise, when those gas pockets under the permafrost get released.

Russia seems to be forgetting that climate change also means rising sea levels, which will result in their coasts and the cities on them being flooded, along with any low-laying terrain extending from there.

So I heard life expectancy is dropping in the US. Will automatisation result in the apoptosis of the surplus labor?

[up][up][up] It's dropping particularly starkly among working class whites, in part because there's a bit of an opiod epidemic going on in small town America.

[up] Apotosis is a cellular self-destruction mechanism which cells in mutlicellular organisms use in various biological contexts. I assume he means "will they start killing themselves", and the answer is already yes since suicide rates among working class Americans are also rising quite starkly.

Why are people focusing so much on Trump? The vermin in Congress is far more evil than he is, and any such push would come from them.

[up][up] The President has always been more visible to the general public than Congress is. If something good happens, the President gets the credit. If something bad happens, the President gets the blame. Congress is largely ignored, and when it isn't, people have low faith in Congress as a whole while liking the Senators and Representative they voted for.

Trump will spend too much time slouching in the presidential chair, having things named after him and gilding every square centimetre of the White House to do much evil. Congress on the other hand...
