The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

But Trump doesn't even enter his Twitter comments himself. He gets some flunky to type them in for him. He's probably never touched a computer in his life, so he wouldn't know a thing about how they work or what they're capable of doing.

But hey, he's a boss. Anything the boss doesn't understand must be easy, right?

Nah any flunky would talk sense into him when he told them to write half those tweets.

Thing is I think he tweets via a smartphone, so it's still entirely possible,e that he doesn't get computers or the internet, but the Twitter app, that he can manage.

[up] Not really, they're just a size or two too big. You can tell by the shoulders and by how big the cuffs are. For someone who gets so riled up by people saying he has small hands, he certainly tends to wear suits that are perfectly designed to make his hands and feet look tiny.

The Wall Street Journal's editor stated during Meet the Press that he was reluctant to call Trump's less factually accurate statements as lies.

Remember when it was just the opinion section of the WSJ that sucked?

So the Wall Street Journal is now a Trump propaganda rag. Good to know. I'll just keep reading Teen Vogue, thanks - they've been killing it on the political field lately.

LBJ was probably the biggest piece of shit President we had in the modern era, but man oh MAN did he get shit done.

Which is why I don't give two fucks about personality. If you're a pragmatic progressive, and ruthless? Have at it, son. Go buck wild.

[up][up][up] Oh, I'm completely serious. Teen Vogue have been pulling no punches in their coverage of the current political disaster. For example.

It actually makes sense once you think about it. It's an outlet that's being mostly run by women, many of whom are young, many of whom are nonwhite or otherwise members of marginalized demographics. Their commitment to social justice and journalistic integrity has been something to admire in the last few months, especially when contrasted with the shameful behavior of other media outlets and organizations.

LBJ's legacy was unfortunately forever tarnished by Vietnam, which quickly got out of control under his reign. But the man was one of the hardest-working presidents of the last 50 years, signed a TON of bills, staved off nuclear annihilation, and got the ball rolling on civil rights. It didn't hurt that Congress back then wasn't the ideological "the other side is the literal enemy, we can't compromise on anything!" nonsense that we have now.

You think Trump is gonna even come close to the positives LBJ did in just five years? Doubt it.

LBJ had specific goals and didn't care about what anyone thought of him. Trump has no meaningful goals and cares way too much about what the person in front of him at any given moment thinks of him.

LBJ was probably deliberately probing to see how much he could get away with in terms of personal behaviour, while Trump is genuinely too stupid to know what he's doing wrong.

You can tell by the answers he gives to things like the Blind Trust question. He doesn't even give the right answer for someone trying to dodge the question. He tends to give weird non-committal answers that rarely have anything to do with the question, and it's glaringly obvious to anyone who knows anything about the question.

@ Teen Vogue doing politics: Huh. I confess that is not what I'd've expected from a magazine called Teen Vogue.

That said, skimming the site brought me to this Politico article:

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/mar-a-lago-donald-trump-new-years-eve-party-233070

Mar-a-Lago sold tickets to New Year’s Eve party with Trump

Incoming White House Director of Strategic Communications Hope Hicks rejected criticisms that Mar-a-Lago was selling access to the president-elect.

“The transition is not concerned about the appearance of a conflict,” she said. “This is an annual celebratory event at the private club, like others that have continued to occur since the election. Additionally, the president cannot and does not have a conflict.”

Additionally, the president cannot and does not have a conflict.”

Whatever you say.

He tends to give weird non-committal answers that rarely have anything to do with the question, and it's glaringly obvious to anyone who knows anything about the question.

This seems to have been in play with a lot of people online who claimed to have voted for Trump and do not have a history of posting blatantly racist things in public or engaging in doublethink. They know nothing, they have no intent to learn anything, and are easily influenced by some random meme.

Obama will be delivering his farewell speech in Chicago on the 10th of January.

Since it didn't happen last time, don't expect the Russians or some faction in their government that can be scapegoated to be officially declared enemies and Trump and co. charged with treason for collaboration with them.

No, that's what his bosses want. Trump will just make a bunch of self-contradicting statements on the issue.

I wonder what Trump is going to do with regards to Iran? On the one hand, the Republicans want war. On the other, Tehran is an ally of Trump's new Tsar.

I'm starting to wonder, could Putin blackmail Trump into giving a shit about climate change?

Putin has said that climate change will be favourable to Russia. So it's more likely to have the opposite aim - to make it worse.
