Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The TPP was NAFTA improved. It was going to allow room for greater demand for American workers since the provisions in it insisted on better economic conditions and amelioration in the Asia-Pacific region, make it more environment friendly and safe. This greater expense to be born by nations in the pacific, like Vietnam and others, would in the short run create demand for American labour, whose products would attract sales internationally.
It would also keep China from becoming the pre-eminent global superpower...which is I think going to happen soon. They are talking about reigniting the Palestine peace talks and taking a lead in that situation, they are soon going to buy out Hollywood and if they move in the Asia-Pacific with their trade agreement, US is shut out.
Problem is nobody bothered to explain all this and how it would improve on NAFTA.

So it's basically this:
"For the love of God, anyone but Trump! The man is a national disgrace! We know you can't stand HRC. Fine. It doesn't have to be HRC. It doesn't have to be a Democrat. We'll go with a Republican. We'll vote for Mcmullin. We'll vote for Romney. We'll vote for Kasich. We'll vote for Ryan. We'll vote for Powell. We'll vote for Bush. Any Bush! We'll vote for Reagan's corpse! We'll vote for a fucking pet rock!
ANYONE BUT TRUMP!"

What about Mecha-Zombie-Hitler? Or Satan? Either one works.

The sad things about these faithless electors is that I suspect their reasons for turning faithless will be largely forgotten by history- people interested in looking at such things will see that they voted for some random Republican instead of Hillary like they were supposed to. Anything more than that about them... we're talking about a footnote of a footnote.
So history will see them as turning on the democrats, when in fact they're trying to meet the republicans half-way.
There was a point during the campaign where I heard someone say that Trump looked like he was wearing an ill-fitting 'Donald Trump' costume, and that made me start thinking about what's underneath the costume. I concluded that he probably wasn't a lizard person, because they're traditionally somewhat better at hiding their true nature and playing the politics game.
Ahh, but that's contingent on history actually remembering that the point of them turning faithless was desperate bid to stop Trump. Which I suspect will be a decidedly obscure factoid.
Unless, of course, they actually manage to succeed.

So we aren't living in V? Honestly, that's not much of a comfort.
At this point if the Combine showed up and took over...
Well, okay, it would definitely be much worse. But at least there would be a certain dignity to it. I mean, just typing "President Trump" is embarassing.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, it looks like Pakistani's aren't going to be blocked off from the United States, even though Pakistan is one of the most religiously extreme nations in the world and one of the nations that actively finances Islamic Terrorism.
How do you think all the Hindu Nationalists, both in India and the United States, are going to feel when they hear this?

I'm pretty sure he says that to everyone that he wants to love him. I mean, Jesus Christ, just look at the rest of their exchange.
Anyone who actually expects him to hold up his end of a bargain is terminally stupid.
Note that the hyperlink itself reads "donald-trump-tells-pakistan-whatever" which is profoundly more accurate.

I almost pity the Trump voters who voted for him for reasons other than validating their own bigotry and xenophobia. They actually fell for his used car salesman bullshit.
Almost.
@Eschaton
That would mean that millions of Americans are terminally stupid, given that they voted him into the Oval Office.
Granted, I'm not saying you're wrong...

Disgusted, but not surprisedHindu nationalists don't care if its just rhetoric (which Trump is prone to doing). The only way they get irate is if he actively gets involved in Kashmir and tries to force India into multilateral negotiations or if he cancels deals with India over nonsense. Then you can take glee at the schadenfreude.
The funny thing about that Carrier deal mentioned earlier is that they were originally planning to move 2100 jobs to Mexico. The deal only saved about 1000 jobs in return for YUUGE bribes. The best bribes. Which means Carrier is still moving 1100 jobs to Mexico.
So Trump was only able to save fewer than half of the jobs in a deal that will cost Indiana's taxpayers bigly.
Par for the course for Trump I guess. No wonder he didn't get an MBA at Wharton.
Big business is going to have a field day with Trump's administration. At least until he screws up so badly he crashes the global economy, screwing everyone over.

Disgusted, but not surprised

The faithless pushing against Clinton isn't a rejection of her so much as a desperate bid for pragmatisim. They know one of the main Republican arguments against Trump is that Clinton is worse, so they're trying to take the fangs out of it.
My source on these details is a Vox article, I linked it before but can't find it again at the moment.
