Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Silasw: Yeah, I'm aware that communism was the go-to Casus Belli until after the collapse of the Soviet Union, that was a bit of laziness on my part. That being said, in my reckoning, the number of harmful or failed interventions greatly exceeds the success story. I don't count Germany and Japan into this, since the sort of utter defeat inflicted upon them in World War II that allowed for a radical restructuring of their society under American directive is neither humane nor politically feasible. Plus the post-war economic incentive, namely the need to offload American industrial output no longer exists.

... Wow, second thread I frequently visit that I open up to find a series of thumps in. Anyway...
Texas elector quits, says pledge binding and Trump 'not biblically qualified'
.
Basically, the guy already pledged to the Texas GOP that he'll cast his vote in accordance with the Texan general public's will, but does not consider Trump qualified to be POTUS, so he Took a Third Option and resigned his post.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Fair enough, if anyone does want to talk about interventionism in relevant threads we do have them by the way.
So what happens now? Is no vote cast or does someone replace the guy?
The article mentions the Texas GOP chairman said that "a replacement for Sisneros will be selected by the remaining electors when they meet Dec. 19." Wether he means just the Texan electors or all of the electors is unknown to me.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. So I saw this graphic on The Nib.

It's going to be a long four years.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOne way or another it won't last long.
He'll be impeached in a year's time for sure. This man is incompetent and self-destructive and goddamn lucky. Those three attributes are always going to be a tension with him, and he's going to do more crazy and outrageous things and keep pushing his luck. In that situation two things happen, either he'll overreach and collapse, or he sparks a thermonuclear war and kill us all.

Did someone suggest captioning the meeting between Trump and Romney
?
Romney praised Trump after their dinner together
. The politicking never stops, and it looks like Romney, if he intends to do any good at all, will be laying low for it.
You know, Jared Kushner is the only guy in the Trump retinue that I find interesting. Not that I like the guy, but there's something about him that strikes me as off. I mean the other people in that Rogues Gallery make sense. Trump, his airhead daughter who asked her servants to use their spare cash to buy lemonade from her
, Rasputin Steve Bannon, Theocrat Mike Pence. Within that, Kushner is just The Team Normal.
Then you read about his past. His family were donors to the Democrat Party, then his father got taken down by Chris Christie. He got embarrased when it was revealed he paid his way into Harvard. And now he's helping to put a fascist in power. He's the Sidney Falco to J. J. Hunsecker.
Romney ultimately bent the knee.
What I imagine is going through Putin's head now: All alone, Watch them run, They will tear each other into pieces, Jesus Christ, this will be fun! Da da da dat da dat da da da da ya da, Da da da dat dat da ya daaaaa! Hahahahahahahahaha

Disgusted, but not surprisedTo be honest, Romney is probably the best case scenario. I don't think I'll particularly like him, but he managed a presidential campaign with only one serious gaffe, and until recently was critical of Trump.
While going down with sword in hand fighting against what he said was essentially corruption of his party might be more principled, at the least he'd be a somewhat moderating influence.
That's not to say that it'll be sunshine and rainbows, but I doubt he'll for instance, dial 1-800-KREMLIN. And that alone would be something to be grateful for.
Also Guliani just strikes me as out of his depth, and is a bit of a loose cannon with his mouth. Plus, apparently there are accusations of business entanglements with Qatar just to add to that mess.

Bet you didn't see that coming

For us Batfans out there - this video was released in 2009, yet the final twist by Joker lecturing the class about who could be Batman towards the end of it is made even funnier by recent events.
