Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Did this already get posted? It's kind of old but I didn't see it here. Guardian is a rag, but the quotes seem legit:
Trump has previously said that climate change is a “hoax” perpetrated by the Chinese, although on Tuesday he said there is “some connectivity” between human actions and the climate
Walker, however, claimed that doubt over the role of human activity in climate change “is a view shared by half the climatologists in the world. We need good science to tell us what the reality is and science could do that if politicians didn’t interfere with it.”
It appears that there may have been some classic examples of vote padding happening in Wisconsin. When a reliably blue state in recent presidential elections suddenly shifts to red by the smallest of margins, it should raise some concerns. The state has removed nearly 5,000 votes from Trump’s lead over due to human error.
Trump just lost 5,000 votes from Wisconsin so far.
So are we still supposed to "give him a chance"?
That ship has sailed.
As someone who voted for HRC while registered in California — the state primarily responsible for HRC's YUUUGE "Bigly" popular vote lead — I'd like to say two things to him: 1) "I am a very much alive U.S. Citizen who is registered to vote in California and did so properly", and 2) "Fuck you".

Disgusted, but not surprisedMy motto in life is this song by The Rolling Stones:
I had no expectations when Obama came in...Basic requirement was "Don't be Bush"...Obama surprised me by also "not being B. Clinton, not being Reagan, not being Carter" and a few others. With Trump, my attitude is more or less, "From this moment on, none of us is safe".
About the only thing that gives me hope is Putin...because if he is Trump's blackmailer/handler, at least the foreign policy won't be too insane. America is definitely going to become a kleptocracy, that much is certain. The process has already begun.
Since then, protests have exploded to roughly 4% of the South Korean population all in Seoul (2 Million or so at last count, from what I remember.). Park's approval rating is at 4%. Her party and the opposition are following through on Impeachment hearings next month for essentially corruption.
Also, of what I heard, adding onto this, it was discovered in the last week that her administration was buying prescription drugs in bulk, including Viagra, Lidocaine, Propofol and various narcotics, and keeping them in their offices. I'll let you guys take your brains from there.

I can't see any American politician ever being impeached for corruption, for the simple reason that most of them are corrupt, and to call attention to a corrupt President or Congressperson would be to call attention to oneself as well.

She's also a case of Like Father Like Daughter. Her father Park Chunghee, South Korea's former military dictator, had a similar relationship with Choi's father, the previous leader of the cult. Choi and Geun-hye were thick as thieves growing up.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm kind of afraid that if these recounts and investigations don't turn up anything, it's essentially going to end up being like Obama's birth certificate, but on the other side. I want to know that this actually has credibility to it, even if I do hope that it could potentially turn things around. I do believe that a popular vote margin this wide warrants looking into.
The "all politicians are corrupt meme" is indeed what got us here, and "our elections are corrupt!" talk from Jill Stein is also what got us here, so I think it's kind of weird for liberals to suddenly be talking about rigged elections.
There's no evidence of that. Now, if an audit finds something, then it's good we had one, but there's virtually no chance of that.
Trump does not need a supplier, the man produces his insanity all on his own, and hey, if Hillary having the flu means she's about to keel over and die, what does Trump having an itchy nose mean? Web MD says cancer
two names disprove that: Sanders and Corbyn

I don't believe the recount will change anything, but I do think it's important symbolically that a popular vote/electorial college split be followed by grumblings about challenging the result.
And I think that while some people probably believe there was hacking, I think the majority of people supporting the recount are just taking hope where they can find it- 'if there's any chance at preventing a Presidency, it's worth trying, even if it is a longshot' is the general mindset, I believe.

I'm leaning towards a Hanlon's Razor explanation for any vote irregularities uncovered by the recount.
I doubt very much that this recount will change the results of the election. That said, since the money was already raised, it might as well be done. At the very least, it might help reassure people that the election was not hacked by Russians.
Disgusted, but not surprisedObama did in fact run a historically clean administration
.
A lot of political corruption in America is more in the realm of lobbying and legal enrichment (those paid speeches they made a big deal out of). And even then you have stuff like Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Rights Bureau.
Stuff like the graft in South Korea, and what Trump is promising to bring hasn't really been seen very often.

Trump is getting butthurt and trying to claim his opponent rigged the election because she has a huge lead in a state that is strongly Democratic and has very convenient voter registration and voting options
The winner of the election is trying to delegitimize votes that were against him — votes that won't actually sway the results.
...If the Democrats really were capable of pulling what he is claiming happened, they would have done it in the swing states. Y'know, so that HRC would have won.
... ... ... ...This. Is. Not. Normal.
@Potatoes Rock
And of course the people who worship him are mostly people he wouldn't want anywhere near him if he could help it.
