Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In other news, the Dakota pipeline protests are still growing larger, more protestors injured, and their main encampment again is being ordered to disperse. Since temps are falling well below freezing police have turned to using more water cannons and fire hoses to soak down tents and bodies and hoping hypothermia forces them out.
Army Corps of Engineers has apparently issued a poorly worded warning that said demonstrations would not be tolerated outside of state-designated "free speech zones".
The art of the compromise; hold your nose and close your eyes. We want our leaders to save the day, but we don't get a say in what they trade away. We dream of a brand new start, but we dream in the dark for the most part.
Dark as a tomb where it happens. Obama's been in the room where it happens.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Some articles note that the danger of the recounts is the Thomas Pynchon formula: "If you have them asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers".
Trump's victory was rigged...but by gerrmandering, neo-Jim Crow voter-Id laws and so on. That is "quote unquote" legal rigging. If you can do that, why hack and fix the elections and add extra voters...and the danger of these recounts aside from wasting time and money, is that it could add to Trump's legitimacy and deter further debates on the crap that got him elected.
It's a Trump is a thin skinned manchild thing. He wants respect, never can get it.
Goes to show that Stare Decisis is a thing.
We're now going to find out how cynical the Republican party have been all along. They have been obstructionist BS artists for more than 20 years since Gingrich took the white house, huffing and puffing and making a partisan gridlock solely to command and control the white demographic, whose interests they don't give a damn about. Now they finally have a platform to do all the crap they promised and we'll find out how far they are really going to go.

It seems far more likely to me that they will find out that thousands of votes were thrown out under dubious circumstances then any evidence of hacking.
As for whether the Republicans are going to go through with their ideology if no one else Paul Ryan seems gunho with dismantling the social safety, starting with getting rid of the ACA and turning Medicare into (ironically) into a healthcare exchange with vouchers.
It remains to be seen how many other Republicans want to go through with this, but I imagine there will be quite a few at least.

Well if, and its a huge IF...evidence is found (which I am sure it won't)...America will break off all diplomatic relations with Russia, call its ambassador and shut down its embassy there. They will also try and get Russia kicked out of its special veto in UNSC...and that could lead to Bay of Pigs 2: This time It's Personal and you could see a NATO-Russia war or the stirrings of that. Trying to remove Russia from UNSC will be catastrophic because that's a Balance of Power that China and France want to maintain. China is the one major power in the world that 1) Likes the status-quo, 2) Wants no wars to destabilize it. So there will be incredible tensions for a few years or so...but no war I think (and hope).m
Domestically, there will be huge outrage and potential riots...because Trump-voters energized by the vision of seeing their toxic hatred legitimized will see this as a plot, and you could see militia attacks and violence. Best case, a few isolated shootings and mass murder...worst case...a second Draft Riots incident...total worst case, another civil war.
Obama might have to declare a state of emergency and Congress will have to decide whether to make Hillary President, or to conserve US institutions in a time of crisis, extend Obama's term for another 4 years and say the Election of 2016 was compromised because of vote hackings and was indecisive and they're going for the last guy who won both the EC and Popular Vote. That would be the pragmatic move domestically and globally.
If there was undeniable evidence of Russia tampering with the US election that gave Trump the win....
Fuck.
Tensions between the two countries would almost instantly be at Cuban Missile Crisis levels.
At the very least, the US would sanction Russia's economy back to the stone age.
New Survey coming this weekend!@ Hodor 2 158827: From what I understand, Congress passed some resolution saying Obama can't make any more regulations or orders before his term ends, or something like that. I don't know why he didn't do anything before now, but it seems now he can't even if he wants to.

Honestly, I'm not sure there was any real hacking going on with the elections either. You'd think if there were, Trump or whoever else would be doing a lot more to keep the recount from coming to pass, but as is, they just seem to be chilling and sitting pretty. And you'd also think if there was any hacking involved, we'd already have found about it by now instead of having to do a fricking recount, so there's that.

I think that if there was any hacking involved- which is a huge if- Trump wasn't directly involved- quite possibly not even aware of it.
Also, 538 says
that the average swing from recounts is two orders of magnitude too small to flip even the closest state here. The Florida recount in 2000 was the biggest ever, but even that's 1/10 of what we'd need to change any state.
If you squint and interpret the data selectively, you can make a case for there being precedent for a swing big enough to flip Michigan, but no such luck for Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. They would have to be strong evidence of hacking for the recount to matter.

More like SMD.
