Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Didn't Stein actively endorse Trump by the end?
There's a lot to admire about Germany, but I'd question the narrative that they 'learned their lesson' from past wars and became a better nation directly because of it. Sure, they may not be invading anyone lately, but why invade when you can control them via the much less messy means of economic domination? And as with most of that region, Germany's seeing a sharp rise in hate crimes. Their cultural sensitivity to the topic hasn't particularly made them any more immune to it than the rest of Europe.
We could steal a lot of good ideas from Germany, but a silver bullet versus white nationalism is not something they've developed.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Jokes aside, I wouldn't recommend running away to Canada. If you're privileged enough that you can afford to leave the country at the drop of a hat, you probably aren't among the people who are actually in danger from a Trump presidency.
One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!@Henry 42: No, but it also doesn't absolve her of standing back and throwing doubt at a qualified, generally fairly standard politician when the alternative was Donald Trump's fascist circus ring. The Green Party should focus on getting its message out on local levels of government instead of popping its head out of its hole every four years to kneecap the Democratic candidate for President and scuttle back into the shadows with 1% of the popular vote.
As people have noted, our presidential system is first past the post. That means that it was always going to be Hillary or Trump, and it will always be either a Democrat or a Republican until a third party is consistently starting to poll around 30%. I don't doubt that some people (at least a dozen, maybe) who weren't going to vote went to vote for Stein, so that's all well and good, but comments like that promote false equivalency and increase voter apathy. And if she convinced people not to vote for Hillary or not to vote at all by promoting the 'two evils' narrative, then she did directly contribute to Hillary's loss.
Let me put it this way - if Donald Trump mocking a disabled man, a dead veteran, etc. on national TV didn't sway Trump voters away from him, a Jill Stein interview on C-SPAN sure as hell didn't do it. What she did do was give a bunch of young stronger-left voters and people who were bitter about Bernie's loss in the primaries more reason to dislike Hillary.
It's been fun.So....Tulsi Gabbard has been endorsed by David Duke to be Secretary of State.
New Survey coming this weekend!
Harper wasn't Trump though, and even he did a decent job at marginalizing the extremists within his own party. And the Tories have made a decent effort to move towards the center on a lot of issues. A few bad apples aside, namely a certain Trump fangirl...
In fairness, anyone who expected a faithless vote or even a courteous response from a Texas Republican was probably setting themselves up for disappointment.
Regarding the Recount
I don't want to get my hopes up, but godspeed, Jill Stein. You helped put us in this mess, but if you can get us out of it, then we cool.

Mhm. I didn't like Harper, but he was leagues better than Trump and I always felt that he was more competent than Bush.
The cynical part of me says that's why she's doing this. That she doesn't think it'll work, but that it will make a lot of people look more favourably upon her.

It probably is. But regardless of the why, it will put to rest a lot of concerns about those three states, especially with the Clinton campaign now stepping in to oversee it.
Which, I think, is why the Clinton team is doing it. I doubt anyone harbors any expectations of successfully flipping the election through the recount, but if nothing else, it'll be good to have an answer as to whether Russia hacked the polls.
Because IF there was any foul play going on, it was undoubtedly Russia. And Hell, I would stake 80% odds that if Russia did hack the election, even Trump probably doesn't even know about it. He's a tool to Putin, not a partner.
But that's IF.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.@RedSavant Most Stein voters already had a low opinion of Clinton, and probably wouldn't have voted for her anyway.
They do; the media just ignore it. Like with other minor parties, their presidential runs are just to generate publicity for local races.
One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!Listen up real careful. This ain't about white flags, truces, or capitulations. Hell, don't give an inch in actual policies. This isn't about giving ground. This is about talking to your opponents, like they're fucking human beings, instead of lumping them all into one basket, and painting them in with one fat brush. Let alone lord your smarts, your culture, your enlightenment over them. It won't fucking matter that they're a shrinking demographic, if after a win like this the Republicans change the rules so that they never lose again. You can't count on people just dying out or being outbred. In fact, that's a horrible mindset; how about showing some humanity and compassion instead?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
