Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I wonder if he'd last long enough for the Torches & Pitchforks to happen the 14th of July
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVSince it was a comparison with Versailles I felt extending the comparison to the storming of the Bastille was more appropriate.
You know, 9th of July is right in the middle of the two dates, and it's also the day my country declared independence
, how about we split the difference there?

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVAs far as the French Rev comparison goes...Bastille and Quatorze Juillet is not what you guys want.
The real incident that changed the Revolution, more than Bastille and Napoleon is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women
's_March_on_Versailles the Women's March To Versailles]]. This incident overnight shifted the capital from Versailles to Paris for the first time in 100 years and basically made Paris the heart of France...and it has remained since then.
Incidentally, A woman's march on washington
is planned.
But remember guys, the Revolution happened to kindly portly Louis XVI and not the absolute monarch Louis XIV. Only bad kings face revolution...so little Barron Trump when he ascends the throne of the Hereditary Republic will face the Sins of Our Fathers.

Here's a source on secretary Clinton's campaign joining in to the recount
.
It's becoming more and more clear that Trump's base are driven by sentiments that have nothing to do with economics and more to do with Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence. The fact that his appointments are right-wingers with anti-Civil Rights, anti-LGBT credentials is to their liking and approval.
It was a combination of that and the declining fortunes of many people in the Rust Belt.
When your towns are dying and your outlook looks bleak, you are more than willing to throw someone under the bus to get out of that or even blame them for that decline, or you don't realize that you're doing so because the people who will be most harmed by the Trump administration (black people, latinos, LGBT+, etc) don't really live anywhere near them.
Even if there is a recount, and even if the EC goes with Hillary, Trump wouldn't accept that. After all, he said before that he would only accept the results if they were in his favor. And that's one stance that I sincerely doubt he would flip-flop on.
I wonder if somebody might be able to dig up a guillotine somewhere? (Purely as a symbolic display, of course...)
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.![]()
The reason why I string up the World's Smallest Violin for that is they are not really interested in getting out of their rut...they want others who they see as lesser beings dragged down below.
This is the Mudsill theory
. Sure The American Dream might be a fraud but I can believe it as long as it doesn't become true for other people. Or as Gore Vidal said, "It is not that I must succeed, but others must fail"
The thing is, poor whites are going to be harmed by a Trump administration too. They repaid Obama's attempts at economic stimulus with the current deadlock Congress, though. The ideology baked into those areas is that poverty is a sign of laziness or entitlement (look at the whole 'welfare queen' myth), and they don't feel lazy or entitled, so they can't really be poor, just troubled by a whole host of troubles. (Mostly paraphrased from here
.) Therefore, the government shouldn't help 'poor people' because they're lazy, and they don't need help because they're not 'poor people'. Throw in racist stereotypes and the aforementioned 'no minorities for miles' social situations, and you have a perfect storm of people who are too proud to believe they need help because admitting they need help would make them like the people who are supposed to be inferior.
It's amazing that scandals that would have single-handedly sunk other politicians are things Trump can do with impunity. Contrast with Hamilton, who had one affair, and confessed everything.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Way to fuck everyone, including yourselves, rust belt voters.

Actual pitchforks and torches might be involved.
Disgusted, but not surprised
