The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]There's a Ken Burns documentary though finding it may be tricky for you without digging through the seedier side of the internet. The video link on that page is expired.

[down]IIRC you aren't in the USA, but if you;re able to go through Amazon.com it can be gotten there both on disk and digitally.

It's for the good of the republic, but, Romney, no one will hold it against you if you tell Trump to go screw himself.

Lmao. Trump isn't going to hire Romney. He wants to publically humiliate him.

Romney would be wise to to tell him to screw off and rebel from the inside.

RE: Civil War

It doesn't matter if the North was fighting to free the slaves, what matters is that the South was, from the word "go", fighting to keep them. You can't separate slavery from the Confederacy anymore than you can separate anti-Semitism from Nazi Germany—it is the core value around which society was organized, regardless of what the outside world thought. The USSR wasn't fighting to defend Jews from Hitler, but Hitler was absolutely fighting to get at the Jews he believed controlled the USSR. It's the same deal here. Whatever Lincoln's intentions, Davis and co, were in it it defend slavery.

[up][up][up]Weird accent. Sounds like a British actor with a Received Pronunciation accent trying (and failing) to do a New Englander's non-rhotic.

To get the accent down, listen to some of Senator Ted Kennedy's speeches (while trying to ignore the stupidity.) "Pahk yah cah in Hahvad Yahd," etc...

@Romney stuff: Man, fuck Trump so hard if he goes through with that. Fuck him even harder if he publicly humiliates Romney like that and then doesn't give him the job.

The GOP can't get sick of him soon enough.

[up][up][up] As I said, the point is more to not paint the North more heroic as it was. Just look what shaping themselves as the bastions for freedom for their actions in WWII has done to the US and the UK. It is a very damaging mythos, especially since it lead to the believe that there is something about the German nature or culture which lead to the Holocaust. Had there be a better understanding for the mechanism behind it in the US, as well as a better understanding for its own role in this sorry story (you know, like the fact that the US send whole ships full of Jews back to Europe and had no intention whatsoever to take action until the Japanese attacked them), people might have recognized the danger Trump represents.

Also Romney hopefully knows better than giving Trump the satisfaction.

The thing is that I'm genuinely unsure what Romney should do. If he tells Trump to go fuck himself, there goes any chance of getting anyone who isn't a Trump crony in the cabinet. But it's also important that people publicly stand up to him.

So, maybe say 'just so you know, we're going to impeach you unless you sell your hotels like, right now. I'll swallow my pride and give you your goddamn apology, but understand that you're hanging by a thread.' or something like that.

I'd say respond with something like "I'm sure Donald Trump has the wisdom to realize there is nothing to apologize for.", which still strokes his ego while sidestepping the apology.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

Or he could simply say nothing and ignore Trump...the more Trump insist on an apology, the more stupid he will look....

[up][up]Sure, but that would lead to Romney not getting the job, which in turn would lead to the cabinet not having anyone who'd stand up to Trump.

Romney: I stand by what I said, every bit of it. You stand only for yourself, it’s what you do. I can’t apologize because it’s true.

I hope Romney would pull a Ted Cruz and when he's set to apologize just goes off on Trump even harder than he did back in the Spring.

[up][up] I don't understand people voting for Trump assuming that he would break his promises.

They don't think he'd break his promises. There's a subsection of Republican voters who think Republican rhetoric is empty bluster and much noise signifying nothing. That it's all to whip up a few jerkoffs and Republicans mean "Low taxes on the middle class and up the amount of cops to keep gangs away.". That to strip away healthcare or Social Security is crazy talk. Basically the GOP's spoken in loud rhetoric so long they think it's gibber jabber.

Straight from the Article:

“I’ve heard that what he wanted to do first is get rid of Obamacare,” Mr. Murillo, a Nicaraguan immigrant who is a citizen but did not vote, said of Mr. Trump. “But my personal opinion is that he will discuss it with other people who will convince him that we can’t get rid of this. I think it’s going to be maintained one way or another, and I’m going to keep it as long as I can.”
After Mr. Perez left, Mr. Garcia, the insurance agent, allowed that he hoped Mr. Trump would, in fact, change the law. It is not fair that low-income people get help with their deductibles, he said, while marketplace customers with slightly higher incomes, like himself, do not.

“Maybe Mr. Trump can make it better by making it more equal,” he said.

They either think Republicans will make it cheaper and more accessible or Trump will be convinced/blowing hot air.

I mean, at this point, the election is over. People like us can say that their expectations are wrong, but at this point, a more relevant line to practice is going to be "I told you so."

Well, not really, because that's a good way to anger people, but all the same.

Wow.

The US taxpayer could pay up to $3 million (£2.4m) to President-elect Donald Trump’s company in order to provide security for him at Trump Tower, it has been reported.

The Secret Service and NYPD are likely to need two floors in the New York skyscraper to house more than 250 security officers.

Mr Trump’s flagship Fifth Avenue building has priced vacant floor space at $105 (£84) per square foot, according to the New York Post, amounting to $1.5 million (£1.2m) a year per floor.

It is not unusual for the Secret Service to pay rent on workspace to protect the senior political figures outside official residences.

But this is likely to be the first time the government agency has had to pay a company belonging to the President-elect to provide his own security.

Sources told the newspaper a permanent security office is planned in the building, though 40 floors below the Trump residence on the top floor.

Mr Trump has indicated that he intends to spend less time in Washington than his predecessors and may use Trump Tower as a key base outside of the White House.
