Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thing is the Electoral College wasn't designed to prevent a popularity strongman, that's a post fact false justification. It was designed to give rural voters a stronger voice then urban ones, and in that it succeeded like never before.

Excellent!
I say we should hear the people's voice! (OH!)
For the country is facing a difficult choice! (OH!)
And if you were to ask me who I'd promote—(OH!)
let's go and recount your votes!
God, I hate Jefferson so much.
Dude was a winner when it came to getting his way, but a loser when it came to upholding his (utopian bullshit) principles.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Say what you want about third parties, but it's still on the Dems for assassinating the chances of the only plausible candidate they had to foster the coronation fantasy of a politician so thoroughly reviled (deservedly or not) by much of country that she was starting behind.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"No. It's not. Sanders was not a reasonable alternative, and that myth needs to die. He lost the nomination because he could not win over sufficient voters, and the narrative that the DNC somehow stopped him from winning the nomination is the very sort of post-fact, Wikileaks based BS that those of us on the rational left are supposed to be immune to.
The hypocrisy of the right wing never ceases to amaze me
New Survey coming this weekend!I blame exactly one group: The one who couldn't be assed to take any interest in what happened in their country and didn't bother to vote. I mean, I get it...it is often the choice between pest and cholera. But voting is not just a right, it is also a privilege and a responsibility. It is pretty pointless to spread around blame, because there are exactly two groups responsible for Trump: The ones who voted for him and the ones who didn't vote against him. And the first group at least did what they thought was right, as misguided as they were. But the second group, they failed their country.

The recount is only going to matter if it uncovers evidence of voting machine hacking. In which case the reported margins and results are fictional. (.. well somewhat fictional. You can only fake the numbers by so much before it becomes blatantly obvious)

Even if it changes nothing, I hope that the recount shows the democrats that there are a lot of Americans desperate for leadership. There's a lot that can be done, still, but without the people actually /in the government/ leading the charge it's all for naught. To change things without the government working with you requires violence, and I really REALLY do not want to see us get to that point.
Admittedly, without a majority there's a serious disadvantage, but I really want to believe that something can be done.

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"@AmbarSonofDeshar I'm aware that the situation in Syria is very complicated, and that Assad has done some very nasty things. It's just that I don't trust the motives of the US in intervening, and I'm not convinced that it's actually making the situation any better.
But I'm done talking about imperialism. It's clearly flame bait in this thread.

One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!

kkhohoho: Because Stein collected the money successfully, and thus has no choice but to file for a recount. There is no way for those states to deny her one, either. She's on the ballot and has the money.
