The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd be careful assuming people are being "dumped" into positions. The repeated question that should be asked of each, even the innocuous ones, is "who benefits?"

Haley, for example, as I was saying. The more I think about it, the more I think she is either very brave taking the job trying to help from the inside or very foolish taking a poison pill that will give control of her state to a Trumpite, put her through a lot of abuse and be an easy target to blame if things go wrong.

The seventh seal has been broken, the moon has become as sackcloth, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria.

Everything in New York City besides Trump Tower is to be leveled and replaced with Trump Apartments, Trump Motels, Trump Taco Drive-Thrus, and Trump Casinos.

You know. The usual.

is "who benefits?"
Well obviously but lack of skill sets leads to scandal.

So, if I've read that shirt right, it says:

Don't be !!!
KISS ASS GENERATION
Make America
Together
Great
Again!!!

Makes about as much sense as anything else in American politics this year.

If he actually did leave the foreign affairs stuff to Pence that might not be the worst thing but we've seen he and Pence were at odds with each other on the campaign trail and I'm not confidant he'd stay out of it.

Anyone know any more about this?

Trump to scrap Nasa climate research in crackdown on ‘politicized science’

Donald Trump is poised to eliminate all climate change research conducted by Nasa as part of a crackdown on “politicized science”, his senior adviser on issues relating to the space agency has said.

Nasa’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.

This would mean the elimination of Nasa’s world-renowned research into temperature, ice, clouds and other climate phenomena. Nasa’s network of satellites provide a wealth of information on climate change, with the Earth science division’s budget set to grow to $2bn next year. By comparison, space exploration has been scaled back somewhat, with a proposed budget of $2.8bn in 2017.

Bob Walker, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said there was no need for Nasa to do what he has previously described as “politically correct environmental monitoring”.

“We see Nasa in an exploration role, in deep space research,” Walker told the Guardian. “Earth-centric science is better placed at other agencies where it is their prime mission.

“My guess is that it would be difficult to stop all ongoing Nasa programs but future programs should definitely be placed with other agencies. I believe that climate research is necessary but it has been heavily politicized, which has undermined a lot of the work that researchers have been doing. Mr Trump’s decisions will be based upon solid science, not politicized science.”

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

I'm stuck between laughing and terrified. Apart from anything else, Trump thinks it's possible to explore the entire solar system in 80-odd years.

There's been a lot of scary things said and announced but this is one of the snippets that gets under my skin the most.

Like, this is basically an admittance that they will undermine any science they don't like regardless of whether it's valid or not.

Trump is going to be president in name only, in various ways, and will leverage that to engage in epic amounts of graft.

It's weird. Some of the time I'm able to acknowledge the reality of "President Trump" without freaking out. The rest of the time? I just want to go out in public and scream out to everyone walking around me to realize how dangerous and abnormal everything about this election has been and will be.

@Tomu: The worst part is that I see that as the best case scenario for a Trump presidency, since it means that he's not doing most of the absolutely horrible things he promised his base.

Well, we'll see about Trump's level of autocracy. He certainly idealizes tyrants. But I kind of get the sense that his biggest character trait is just how LAZY he is.
