The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem is that Milo can still reach his viewer base on other sites, and that being banned from Twitter just gives him a storyline to shriek about being targeted by the Jew SJWs.

It's been fun.

It still amazes me that there are legitimate non-white nazis.

[up][up] I do have to wonder, how many of these people voted him solely because "it's not Hillary Clinton"? How many of them took the bait, hook and sinker and ignored just about everything he's done or said to choose him instead of her solely because she's Hillary Clinton?

[up] My guess? Quite a few. In the Rust Belt states, the lack of personal attention she paid to them plus her husband's signing of NAFTA were probably what cost her crucial votes.

And there were quite a few people who voted for HRC simply because she wasn't Trump. For the record, I was not one of them. I actually approved of a lot of the policies in her platform and I came to respect her for not letting decades of witch hunts and smear campaigns bring her down.

Like I said, Twitter has its own issues, but most of them are related to inaction (and yes, paying more attention to people with pull than not). But when the hammer does come down, it's been against the Neo Nazis.

Not like any law applies to Trump and co anyway.

[up]Exactly.. By this point, it's become a game of 'What law has Trump and his band of deplorables broken today', and if they gain enough points, then maybe they'll win the tiniest amount of public scrutiny.

[up] Honestly, if irregularities are found that end up giving the race to Clinton retroactively, however unlikely that is, it's much better for someone like Stein to be spearheading this effort than Clinton, if only for the sake of appearances.

That's assuming she raises the money. As far as I know, they are currently 0% of the way towards their goal.

EDIT: Okay, some donations are coming in. Still no telling whether or not they reach their goal, and I'm also seeing people say that $2.5 million seems low for funding a recount in three states.

Crossposted from the Economics thread:

Equiblog: Trumpism on trade as a wild goose chase

The manufacturing share of U.S. non-farm labor has declined from 24% in 1971 to 8.6% today, and is projected to reach 6% by 2060. This is largely the result of automation increasing per-capita productivity. This trend will not be reversed even if we stop all foreign trade tomorrow. Thus, chasing after trade deals and offshoring of manufacturing is a chimera, and it will always be a chimera no matter how much anti-globalism lackwits harp on it.

Newsweek: Why Hillary Clinton is being pushed to challenge election results

Computer scientists and lawyers found evidence that vote totals in the three states—Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—might have been affected by a cyberattack.

@fluffy: That's a pretty skewed headline ya got thar. As per the CNN article

"Their group told Podesta and Elias that while they had not found any evidence of hacking, the pattern needs to be looked at by an independent review."

538 explains it pretty clearly that once you account for demographics the effect disappears.

Hrm, presuming all of Trump's appointees get approved, shouldn't it be likely that Trump's administration is just going to be one long series of Katrinas, one after another.

Yeah I'm against a recount. Mainly because "not accepting election results" is the sort of undemocratic bullshit that people were (rightfully) calling Trump out for beforehand. If by some miracle Trump did cheat, fucking fantastic, but I think you folks already want Trump to have cheated so you have something to nail him on.

Honestly right now everyone's doing a lot of elaborate theorizing and planning over a whole lot of nothing. Trump's doing certain actions with the Republican Establishment that Mike Pence would definitely disprove of on moral grounds, the Democratic Establishment is still in shell shock, the alt-right is in Day 15 of the attempt to break the world's longest communal masturbation session, and the far-left is crying and writing their overly sappy goodbyes before they leave for Canada/are taken to the concentration camps they're almost certain already exist.

The truth is that Trump's cabinet is going to be at inherent odds with each other. Republicans are at inherent odds with each other, at least when they don't have a convenient liberal scrapegoat to blame (so do we go back to poor minority communities, or do we keep beating the dead liberal academia horse? Another round of media bashing?). The truth is that we're going to find out very quickly that Trump is nowhere near as Republican as he says, which is going to cause a lot of problems for a lot of people in charge. The truth is that the next few years are going to be less totalitarian dystopia and more mass clusterfuck on an unprecedented scale. The best we can hope for is for no great discoveries/tragedies over the next 4 years.

Like I said. Trump is doing what Dubya did to FEMA: Dump random people into positions as gifts.

That tends to result in major political scandals.

And if a major part of the political bureaucracy is targeted or finds themselves displeased with the boss, it's more likely you'll see Deep Throating/Snowdens.

(Suddenly the Snowdens will be presented in this thread as heroes and patriots.)

More inclined to think that Putin did it.
