The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm starting to think I could get a job in the Trump administration despite having zero qualifications or experience.

Hey, Trump got elected based on that.

Interesting.

Basically that media story you heard about Trump bullying the press might have been an ambush by him to control the a story where he makes himself look strong and them look weak hence why he asked for a meeting that was off the record. He was the one who leaked the story previous story.

He tried doing the same to the New York Times but the NYT wouldn't go off the record with him hence why he cancelled the meeting at first and then relented.

@Balmung

I swear, the next time I hear that from someone who isn't saying it sarcastically...

Exactly how many chances have we given him so far in just the past couple of weeks?

At this point y'all should be rooting for Trump. His fierce absolute refusal to cooperate, even when it is absolutely in his best interests to is going to become highly important over the next 4 years, as the Republicans relearn that being the ruling party means that there's no common enemy to unite against, and thus no real reason for absolute unity.

Trump ran under populism, and he appeals to the folks that secretly want authoritarianism, and the folks who not so secretly crave authoritarianism. But Trump is definitely a party of his own, never forget. So while it's easy to suck up to the establishment and the "loyal followers" now, suddenly when the Establishment's push to suck up to the totally-not-monopolies and highly regulate "unsavory" use of the internet conflicts with Bannon's whole "runs the largest openly racist alt-right website on the internet" deal it'll be way harder to stay absolutely neutral.

Jerry Fucking Falwell as head of the Dept. of Education? Ironically, the only reaction I can think of is 'god damn it'.

It's been fun.

Doesn't matter that he refuses to cooperate because the Republicans in the House and Senate have, almost to a man, agreed to swallow what precious few scruples they have and promised to respond to any demand to jump from Trump with "how high, mein Trumpenfuhrer".

A few of them have a small number of issues they at least seem to be unwilling to budge on (eg. McCain on torture), but they're mostly legislatively insignificant.

Falwell in charge of education? Trump is basically reaching into the dumpster of American society to fill the ranks of his Cabinet.

I'm starting to hope that Romney gets State now, there has to be someone competent/remotely ethical there....

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

[up][up] All of the competent and ethical people are avoiding the administration for the most part. They don't want to be anywhere near this clusterfuck.

This is fine. This is normal.

Yeah. The smart GOP members know this is probably going to be a fiasco administration of an unprecedented scale, and with their own future careers and prospects in mind, why would they potentially want to be anywhere near a man who may end up the most unpopular president in history after his 'honeymoon' breaks.

Romney can at least go "I stepped in to make sure we didn't ruin relations with our international allies and partners." if he gets needled about it, and gets to present himself as the Only Sane Man in the Room.

Meanwhile, Trump proceeds to keep calling the wives of other world leaders fat or "Not 10s".

Personally, I'd gain a lot of respect for Romney if he did exactly that.

Because it's troubling, what's happening now. I mean, he's going to be president. They can't ignore him forever.

So, y'know, either get the ball rolling on impeachment proceedings, or swallow your pride and mitigate the damage he'll do. Or, at the very least, have a spine and publicly denounce him rather than just trying to stay out of the spotlight.

So this is something of a recurring thing? The people who can, could, and should be doing things to curb the incoming damage are fleeing from the duties they most likely got elected to fulfill because they don't think they can do anything about it?

Is this that apathy thing that prevented many voters from voting in large enough numbers years ago so that they can have enough governors who actually would act in their interests so that the next hominid with the codes would be more likely to be someone who wasn't a moldy grapefruit?

but maybe somewhere

Democrats’ Leadership Fight Pits West Wing Against Left Wing

Essentially Obama and people inside the White House would rather see Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez run the DNC, rather than see Keith Ellison take the seat. It's a proxy war between the Clinton arm of the party and the Sanders/Warren arm of the party, as White House allies see giving Ellison the chair as ceding the entire party to Sanders and Warren.

this kind of infighting is not what the party needs right now. Time isn't on their side.

The Neo Liberal Wing don't want to see the party ceded to essentially Labour. It's the same shtick as the Blairites and the Corbynites. Expect the same thing to happen to any other western country with a Center Left-ish party that has the center leaning portion of the party discredited as a total yuck head on the Right Wing shows up.

They had 25+ years in powe, why would they want to cede authority to another wing of the party they feel has no legitimacy or should be kept at the Kiddy Table.

TBF, I'm a bit wary of supporting anyone endorsed by Sanders these days. Didn't he endorse Tulsi Gabbard too? The progressives Sanders endorsed for Senate positions also lost their primaries.

He is not a good judge of character or competence.

But yeah, the infighting is not needed right now.
